Fall Ingredients: Mulberry Bark Extract

In seasonal pies, mulberry's just-so-sweet, just-so-tart flavor is a favorite, but that's not all this plant brings to the table. In skincare, mulberry—specifically mulberry bark extract—acts as a natural botanical skin brightener. So if one of your skin concerns is hyperpigmentation (often caused by sun-damage or aging), look for products that include this ingredient. One of our top-selling serums, glo therapeutics Retinol CS, harnesses the skin-brightening properties of Mulberry. Give it a try to see what this berry plant can do for your skin!

Retinol CS also minimizes the appearance of fine lines, pores, and texture irregularities with Retinol (click here for more Retinol-containing skin care products from glo) and Glycolic Acid. To use, apply the serum at night 2-5 times per week then follow up with sunscreen in the morning since retinol may increase sun sensitivity.

Winter skincare for the colder months ahead

Unless you live in southern Texas or Hawaii, you’ve probably noticed the temperature outside dropping a little day by day as you transition from sundresses, to sweaters, and eventually snowsuits. But your wardrobe shouldn’t be the only thing you change in preparation for the colder months. Winter weather is notorious for wicking moisture away from your skin, and like Cat Tatman, gloProfessional’s director of marketing, says, now’s the time to start hydrating. So before the snowflakes start to fall, keep Tatman’s Tips in mind for a flake-free season.

  • Make sure you are using a product like the Advanced B5 Hydration with hyaluronic acid in addition to your moisturizer because it will help your skin stay balanced. Hyaluronic acid attracts and maintains 1,000 times its weight in water while preventing trans-epidermal water loss, and protecting against environmental aggressors. Also, the great thing about B5 Hydration is that it is suitable for any skin type.
  • Select a slightly heavier moisturizer than you use during warmer months to help seal in your skin's natural moisture, protect against dehydration and provide a buffer against temperature extremes. (Try switching to Conditioning Hydration Cream if during summer months you use something a bit lighter like Oil Free Moisturizer or Oil Control Emulsion.)
  • Transition from a gel cleanser to a cream cleanser like Conditioning Milk Cleanser if you tend to have dry skin. If you usually use Purifying Gel Cleanser, the new Hydrating Gel Cleanser might be a great fit for your skin during the colder months.
  • Incorporate a hydrating mask into your weekly regimen like the Conditioning Restorative Mask
  • Before heading out into harsh conditions for say a ski trip, use a heavy moisturizer like Barrier Balm or Restorative Cream.
  • Continue using Vitamin C Serum and sunscreen to maintain healthy skin all year round.

Fall Ingredients: Apple Enzyme

A steaming cup of hot apple cider is a sweet treat for many on chilly fall days. What may be a guilty pleasure in a drink is anything but for your skin. In fact, apples are chock-full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that work in skincare products to help nurture and reveal your beauty.

Apple enzyme is a fantastic ingredient in skin care because it is rich in amino acids, which are essential to the structure of the skin and to the production of collagen. Collagen is the substance that gives skin its structure, but starts to decline as we age, making enzymes a vital tool in the fight against fine lines and wrinkles. Apple enzyme is also helpful in locking in your skin’s moisture, which can be the first thing to go when treating acne blemishes.

Many acne products are notorious for drying out the skin since they tend to remove a majority of the skin’s natural oils instead of leaving it balanced. But no need to worry with glo therapeutics Clear Acne Cleanser. Its mild formula takes advantage of apple enzyme’s hydrating properties while salicylic acid and scrubbing beads smooth your skin’s texture. Who is ready for an apple?

Fall Ingredients: Pumpkin Enzyme

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word fall? Is it warm-colored leaves, spicy smells, or hearty plates of food? Or, if you’re like us, then it’s probably the bright orange veggie decorating nearly every porch across the country. But did you know that pumpkins are good for more than just tasty pies and Halloween ornaments? In fact, when it comes to your skin, pumpkins are a great source of antioxidants, bioflavinoids, and vitamin A.

Antioxidants are molecules that prevent free radicals (aka unstable molecules) from damaging healthy cells and leading to visible signs of aging. They can be caused by UV radiation, stress, or even smoking.  Bioflavinoids are water-soluble plant-pigments with antioxidant properties. Vitamin A, or vitamin A retinol, increases cell growth and is important in maintaining optimal skin health.

Together, these nutrients assist the skin in breaking down dead and irregular cellular buildup for a more glowing appearance. Give your skin a dose by trying glotherapeutics Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub

This mild exfoliant works well with all skin types except for sensitive skin.

gloProfessional Supports National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at glo, we're proud to support the cause by donating a portion of proceeds from the  special-edition Gloss in pink blossom to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) for the fourth-consecutive year.

According to the NBCF, breast cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of cancer-related death among American women, second only to lung cancer. Each year, approximately 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,000 will die from it. But women are not the only ones vulnerable to the disease. Roughly 1,700 cases each year are also found among men. Statistics like these tell only part of the story. They do not take into account the effect breast cancer has on the families, friends and supporters of those fighting the disease. That's why we are so grateful for the opportunity support all those affected by breast cancer and to join the National Breast Cancer Foundation in its mission to extend women's lives through education and early detection.

Several members of the glōProfessional team can personally attest to the fact that for those faced with fighting breast cancer and the loved ones who help them - the diagnosis can be overwhelming and intimidating. Cathleen Tatman, glōProfessional’s director of marketing, recalls when her mother was diagnosed in 2007. Even though her mother  “is now doing fantastically,” Tatman wanted to do something to help others who find themselves in a similar situation.

“We are a company that has mostly a female audience, and so I thought it was something that would be important to our customers as well,” she said. That's why glōProfessional began donating to the NBCF in 2008, but the support does't stop there. This year, a small group of glōProfessional staff members joined together for the first time to participate in Denver’s Race for the Cure sponsored by the Susan G. Koman Foundation.

“Race for the Cure is a wonderful cause,” said Executive Assistant Dee Carsten. “Until you have participated in the race/walk, a person just can’t realize what a moving experience this is. There are men and children running [and] walking along with women…most everyone knows someone who has been affected.”

So whether survivor, supporter or friend, we join you this month and always and we celebrate the wonderful community united in the fight against breast cancer.
