Q&A with Kate McCarthy: Sunburn Treatment and Coverage

Q&A with Kate McCarthy

Q: Hi Kate! I spent a little too much time at the beach this weekend and am suffering from a bright and painful sunburn. Do you have any tips for reducing and covering up the redness?

Kate McCarthy: The very first thing you want to do is use a soothing treatment. I love glo therapeutics Remedy Gel which has aloe vera, hydrocortisone and rose hip seed oil to aid in tissue repair and treat the burn. To neutralize the redness start with our Redness Relief Powder. This loose powder has a yellow tint, which helps tone down redness, along with green tea extract to help with inflammation. Follow this with our Loose Base in your color. The Loose Base has a dewy finish, which will help keep your skin from looking dehydrated from the burn.  Finish with some Moist Hydration Mist to sooth and hydrate the skin.

Seven Steps to Better Skin This Week

In our opinion Mondays get a bad rap. Yes, the weekend is over and the work week begins again, but we think Mondays are perfect for fresh starts. Start the week off right and vow to follow these seven easy steps to better skin this week. Happy Monday!

1) 30 More Minutes of Sleep
Between getting the kids ready for bed and demanding work deadlines, getting  the recommended 8 hours of sleep might sound like an impossible task. Aiming for just 30 more minutes of sleep per night will still help give your skin the needed time to produce more collagen which aids in firming  your skin. Adding 30 minutes will set  you on the right path to getting the sleep your skin needs.

2) Read a Book
Picking a great book, making a cup of green tea, and curling up in your favorite chair might sound like a perfect lazy afternoon, but it’s also helping your skin. Stress can interfere with almost all of your body’s central systems, including your skin, so engaging in stress reducing activities, like reading your favorite book, have huge stress reducing benefits.

3) Schedule a Facial
There are numerous benefits that come with getting facials: stress release, skin rejuvenation, exfoliation, a skin assessment by a professional... the list goes on and on. There are different types of facials for every skin type or issue so find a local spa near you and book today!

4) Go for a Jog
Working up a sweat through exercise is a great way to rid your body of unwanted toxins that can clog your pores and lead to blemishes. Dermatologist Sandra M. Johnson, MD with Johnson Dermatology in Fort Smith, Ark says, "Exercise increases blood flow to the skin, increases neuronal stimulation, and allows the sweat glands to increase their functions and rid the toxins." So by lacing up your running shoes you are helping your skin go through a much needed detox. Don’t forget to wash those toxins off your body by showering or rising off immediately after exercise.

5) Wash Your Face Before Bed
Washing your face before you go to bed is a crucial step to healthy and radiant skin. During the day our pores collect dirt and grime that need to be eliminated. Sleeping without cleaning out your pores can lead to unwanted blemishes and breakouts. Our Conditioning Milk Cleanser gently washes away the day’s dirt and grime while enriching your skin with moisturizing antioxidants.

6) Eat an Avocado
Eating healthy, natural foods daily can have a huge impact on your skin. Foods with high natural fat content, such as avocados, will keep your skin hydrated and youthful. Avocados are also full of Vitamin E which have powerful anti-aging antioxidants. Need some ideas on how to incorporate avocados into your diet? Check out these yummy and healthy recipes!

7) Wear Sunscrean
We’ve all know how important it is to protect our skin but now it’s time to really start listening. Finding the right product for daily use is critical to protecting your skin from harsh UV rays. We love our Protecting Powder because it has an SPF of 30 because it  can be dusted on right over makeup. Start applying a product with SPF even on the days you are not on the beach and your skin will definitely thank you!

Summer Olympics 2012: Opening Ceremony Beauty

The opening ceremony is only a day away and the excitement about this year’s Olympic Games is building! The opening ceremony is an honored tradition and one that the US Field Hockey team is thrilled to be part of. The ceremony  will be broadcast in over 90 countries worldwide so we asked the ladies how they plan on getting ready for such an exciting event!

Meet the Athletes:
Katie O'Donnell - Striker Michelle Kasold - Striker
Michelle Vittese - Forward                       Caroline Nichols - Defender
Lauren Crandall - Defender                     Amy Swensen - Goalkeeper

gloProfessional: How are you preparing for the opening ceremony?

Michelle K: The opening ceremony will be exciting and you have to look good! I think I'll have to use my Water Resistant Mascara and my Smoky Eye Kit for the evening!

Lauren:  Luckily the easiest thing about opening ceremony is that your outfit is already picked out!  I'll definitely be using the Conditioning Milk Cleanser followed by the Vitamin C Serum. I have to look sharp!

Amy: The majority of my pictures from the 2008 Olympics are from the opening ceremony so I'll want to look nice!I love the Pressed Base powder and Lip Gloss so I'll use both at the opening ceremonies for a natural and simple look.

Katie: I think I will straighten my hair and use my Smoky Eye Kit to look awesome for the cameras.  Oh and the other athletes I will be meeting!

Michelle V: I'll try to remember every second of it. I have gotten into using the Vitamin C Ultra 15% every day, so I'll apply that and hopefully try to look pretty!

Caroline: I really love the Refresh Facial Polish and Vita E Essential Cream. I use the cream daily and it leaves me feeling smooth and confident. I don't wear too much makeup, but will use my Precise Micro Eyeliner to help make my eyes pop and the Bronze to help boost the glow I will already have walking into the opening ceremonies.

We know the ladies will look stunning! Also, check out the uniform designed by Ralph Lauren!

3 Tips to Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Summer

Don’t let the heat and elements keep your skin from glowing this summer. With temperatures hitting record highs, it’s crucial to stay hydrated. Not only is it important for your body, good hydration is also key to looking and feeling healthy and vibrant. Here are our top three tips to keep your skin hydrated and healthy:

3 Tips to Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Summer
3 Tips to Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Summer

1) 8 Glasses a Day....
We’ve all heard by now that everyone should drink 8 glasses of water a day. But is that enough? The 8 glasses a day rule is close to the Mayo Clinic’s recommended 2.2 liters (for women) but it still might not be enough depending on your activity level and environment. Depending on how much you sweat during exercise, and how long you are active, you could up your daily requirement by 1 glass for every 30 minutes of exercise. Environments with high humidity also increase the need for extra hydration as do elevations higher than 8,200 feet. We say better safe than sorry and encourage everyone to shoot for 10 glasses a day!

2) Diet Matters
It’s also important to eat foods with a high percentage of water, such as watermelon or tomatoes, in order to stay hydrated. According to the Mayo Clinic, watermelon and tomatoes are 90 percent or more water by weight. Both are also high in lycopene which protects cells against damage from free radicals. Foods rich in Omega 3s, such a salmon and walnuts, can also aid in keeping your skin hydrated. We think a summer salad with spinach, salmon, tomatoes and walnuts with a side of watermelon sounds pretty appetizing!

3) Be Gentle
Summer can expose us to several elements that can cause our skin to dry out. Air conditioning, chlorine, and frequent shaving are just a few of the things that can cause our skin to become dry and dehydrated. Revive your skin by patting your face dry after showering or swimming and apply a deep moisturizer such as our Conditioning Hydration Cream to relieve extremely dry or chapped skin.

With these tips we hope you can get outside and enjoy a hydrated and healthy end to summer!

Q&A with Kate McCarthy: Makeup to Beat the Heat

Q&A with Kate McCarthy

Q: With temperatures hitting more than 100 degrees I am having a hard time finding products that can withstand the summer heat and humidity. How can I get my makeup to last through the entire day?

Kate McCarthy: Having been through some 105 degree weather myself this summer, I have concocted a few tips to keep your make up from melting off your face. Luckily glo minerals is sweat and water resistant, so half the job is already done for you! Here is how I suggest you take that even further!

Liquid foundations can be a recipe for disaster in the summer, unless you are wearing a matte formula. glo minerals  Protective Liquid Foundation - Matte II is great if you are attending an outside event, or just want extra coverage at the beach. Make sure you mix your it with Moist Hydration Mist and a little Face Primer. I like to put a pea size amount of the foundation and a half a pea size amount of the primer on the back of my hand, mist the two, then mix with my texture brush and apply.

If you are looking for a quick five minute application, I suggest using our Pressed Base which has a semi matte finish and will keep your skin looking fresh and cool. Make sure you use primers for your whole face such as Face Primer, Lid Primer and Under Eye Primer. These are specifically designed to keep product in place! If you want a dewy look, swipe some Shimmer Brick  in gleam or luster all over but a little bit goes a LONG way, so go easy!

If you are worried about eye liner or eye shadow evaporating under high temperatures, set your look with Perfecting Powder. Use an eye blender brush, load it up with powder and tap it onto your finished eye look. The powder is translucent, so it will not affect the color or depth of your shadow or liner.  For lips and cheeks I always prefer a stain in the summer. I love our Powdered Cheek Stain. A little bit goes a long way and it stays on your skin until you wash it off. I dot a little on my lips with my finger, than top it with Gloss in shine. Stay cool out there!!

Summer Olympics 2012: US Field Hockey Pre-Game Rituals

gloProfessional: What pre-game rituals do you have? Any crazy superstitions?

Katie: Not so much a ritual but I like to warm up the same way every game.  So stand in the same places, start drills in the same spot in line, pass with the same person, etc.  I get ready 45 minutes before a game and then just hang out until we leave for the pitch.

Caroline: I always call my dad before every game. I also shower before every game. This gives me an opportunity to use my glo essentials shampoo and conditioner to pamper myself. Showering also gives me a chance to take some alone time and focus before the game.

Kayla: I like to shower before the game so I feel fresh and ready for the game, especially if it is hot outside.  I also like to wear the same sports bra...my game bra.  I wear it only for games.

Michelle K: I don't have any crazy superstitions, but I always put my right sock, shin guard, and shoe on before my left. I also have to listen to music before the game. I always have my iPod with me, the playlist changes, but I like to have my choice in songs.

gloProfessional:  What are the best ways to calm your nerves before a big game?

Michelle V: Honestly, nerves happen to every athlete, some just know how to control them better than others. For me, I try to relax and have fun.  Having fun and trying to focus on the people around me rather than the huge crowd makes me most successful.

Lauren:  Well its easier said than done, but basically stop thinking about what the result of the game will be or how you are going to play and start visualizing or focusing on what you are going to do well because you have trained for that.

Claire: Staying in the moment. Not letting everything going on around you get in your head.

Amy: Routine is big for me. I like that our team has a game day routine. It helps me get through the day without getting too nervous.

Michelle K: The best way to calm my nerves before a big game is to just listen to my music and dance! I know we're prepared, so I like to keep my mind off the game and let out any loose nervous energy. Plus, it's fun!!

Katie: Laugh! Laugh about something stupid or silly with your teammates!

Thanks, Ladies, for the game day insight! We can’t wait to cheer you on this Sunday! Also, check out this week’s Sports Illustrated for an awesome photo of Lauren Crandall and Katie O’Donnell in their lovely gloProfessional USA jerseys!
