Q&A with Kate: How to Prepare for a Job Interview

Q: Hi Kate! I have an important job interview coming up. What are your makeup suggestions for an interview? Thanks for your help!

Kate: Recently a girlfriend of mine went on a job interview for an executive assistant position. After shopping and coming up with some different ideas for make up, it dawned on me that more often than not women either over do it, or under do it when it comes to their makeup. Below find some tips on how to put your best face forward when interviewing for a corporate job*.

1.       Keep your skin fresh. When interviewing you don’t want your skin to be a distraction by looking too cakey or dry. The night before your interview do a small skin treatment with Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub and follow it with a thick lather of Moisture Rich Cream. If you are not super dry I’d try the Brightening Polish followed by Pure Hydration.
2.       Make your eyes pop naturally. I suggest keeping your Eye Shadow colors nude (try bamboo, twig and fawn) then line your upper and lower lash line with Precise Micro Eyeliner in black.  Try to keep the line SUPER tight to the lashes. Next, while looking down with your eyes, gently stamp some Eye Shadow in sable onto the inner rim of your upper lash line. This will make your eyes look laser sharp and awake.
3.       Don’t go crazy with mascara. Something I always find distracting is when someone has on too much mascara! You want your lashes to look naturally darker, and thicker but not overdone. For an interview you really want to focus on lightly emphasizing the beauty you already have!
4.       Keep cheeks cheerful. I like a pop of Blush in begonia on the apples of the cheeks, then blend nectar onto the cheekbones for added dimension. Bright and balanced cheeks will illuminate your entire complexion!
5.      Keep Lips Simple.  I suggest keeping your lips on the glossy side with light color. Nothing is worse than lipstick fading mid-interview or *gasp* lipstick on your the teeth. I like Gloss in naked but if you need a bit more color try Gloss in nude.
6.      Slightly fill in your brows. Don’t go overboard with dramatic eye brows… no one wants a mommy dearest sitting across the desk from them!

A few other basic tips:
  • Dress business casual or corporate. It’s almost always better to be overdressed than underdressed.
  • Don’t wear anything too tight and be sure that you are comfortable enough to sit and move around.
  • Keep your perfume and body lotion ever so lightly scented. Nothing is worse than choking your future employer with an extremely strong scent!

What to wear to an interview

*The way you dress and present yourself should depend on the the job you are going for.  If you are in the beauty industry, then you know as well as I do that personality is key, and your makeup should express what type of artist you are.

Q&A with Kate McCarthy: Creative Uses for Everyday Makeup Products

Q&A with Kate: Makeup Questions Answered

Hi Kate! I love reading all of your tips! I especially love how you find creative uses for everyday makeup products. What are some of your favorite ways to play with product uses?

Kate: For those of you who know me, you know that I am a little bit of a mad scientist when it comes to finding new uses for current products. For those of you who don’t know me, know this… my Friday nights consist of mixing an array of eye shadows, lipsticks, and foundations in my kitchen while conversing with my cats about my week (they never seem to have much to say…).
Here are some of the secret tips I have for using my favorite products in unconventional ways:

Eye shadow: Yes, Eye Shadow is made to go on your eyes but these multi-purpose babies can transform any product sitting in your bathroom. Use Eye Shadow to change or create your own custom lip color by applying under Lip Stick (I talk about mixing Eye Shadow in eggplant with Lipstick in bordeaux here) or use a slightly shimmery color  to highlight your cheekbones. You can also use eye shadow to fill in bald spots along your hairline or scalp (like I do in this video) and fill in your brows.

Lipstick/ Gloss: Try using your Lipstick as an Eye Shadow base (Please make sure you sanitize it first with a paper towel drenched in rubbing alcohol!). For a new twist on a smoky eye use a deep shade of lipstick and swipe a thin layer from your lash line to right below your crease. Blend your smoking color into the lipstick for added depth, drama and a unique undertone.  You can also use Gloss to get added dimension by placing it lightly on top of any eye look. Lipsticks make a great blush as well! Just apply the same way you would apply a cream blush.

Concealer/foundations:  Use these to lighten any lip color! Or for the perfect nude lip, dab your foundation on your lips and top with clear gloss!

Dust 24K : Sprinkle any one of the shades into your hand, mix with glo essentials Style Defining Cream and pull through your strands for a subtle shimmer.

Custom Lip Color: To make a new lip color grab one of your Lipsticks (maybe one that has been lonely for a while) and cut off a small piece. Place it in a small microwavable bowl then use a clean spoolie to scrape off any Eye Shadow color into the same bowl. The ratio should be 1:1 to start then; you can add more of either one as you go to get the desired shade. Place in the bowl in the microwave for about 8-10 seconds then remove and stir with a toothpick or disposable cosmetic spatula (found at any beauty supply store). Place in a small travel pot (found at any container store) and place in the refrigerator for 1 hour. TADA!!! You have a custom shade!

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to mixing, when you have a free night pull out all of your product and start playing. Don’t be afraid to mix different tones and color families, sometimes it might not work, but most of the time the result is awesome!! Just ask my cats!

Looks We Love: Thanksgiving Dinner

Your shopping list is ready, your kitchen is organized and your family is on the way. There is only one thing left to do and that’s decide what you are going to wear. Just because Thanksgiving is a holiday that focuses on food and family doesn’t mean you can’t look comfortable, festive and put-together. No matter where you are headed or who is coming over, you can look polished and confident. Now just don’t burn the turkey!

Casual Gathering with Family and Friends
If you are spending this year’s meal in a casual environment surrounded by people you love we suggest wearing something comfortable and classy. For a simple and pretty look pair a comfy sweater, colorful corduroy pants and smoking slippers with your favorite Eye Shadow Trio and Super Star Gloss.

Semi-Formal Gathering with the In-Laws

If your mother-in-law likes to throw a semi-formal gathering be sure to look the part. We love how comfortable and flattering a maxi skirt can be (hello elastic waistline!)  dressed up with a graphic sweater belted right above the waist. Add Eye Shadow in bamboo and Sheer Lipstick in capri for a perfectly polished look.

Semi-Formal Thanksgiving Dinner Look

Formal Thanksgiving Dinner
If your plans include a more formal dinner we suggested picking something in a comfortable fabric that isn’t too stiff or restricting. The colors of this dress are perfect for the season and look fantastic paired with the Metallic Smoky Eye Kit. We suggest adding Sheer Tint Illuminator to your foundation for a subtle glow!

Kate McCarthy is Thankful for You!

“I am thankful for our glo users for trusting us with their confidence. Some think makeup is a materialistic thing, but to me makeup is a tool to create the most confident, comfortable person you can be. It is not a tool to create a better ‘version’ of yourself for others to see, it is a tool to be the very thing you are… YOU! Why be any other version but yourself?  I am thankful that we get to provide a confidence platform for our customers to use to their full advantage, and I am beyond grateful you choose to use glo!” - Kate McCarthy

We love this quote from our National Makeup Artist, Kate McCarthy, on why she is grateful for all of our wonderful glo followers. To show our gratitude we are offering $15 off your order of $100 or more plus free shipping today only using promo code THANKFUL4U at checkout.

Q&A with Kate: Finding Balance with a Bold Brow

Hi Kate: What are some of your tips for finding balance with a bold brow?

Kate: When it come to brows I think the most effective pairing is clean flawless skin, a lightly contoured  face, nude eyes and soft, matte lips (think Cindy Crawford from the 1990’s). Let’s start with your skin. Choose a foundation with medium to full coverage such as Pressed Base.  Don’t forget to start with Face Primer because you want your pores as minimal as possible.

Next comes contouring. Start by choosing a Pressed Base two shades darker than your actual tone. Use a fan brush to place powder under your cheekbones, jaw line, sides of your nose and your hairline. Then, using Eye Shadow in opal (or any flat, matte white or light flesh color), highlight the tip of your chin, bridge of your nose, cheekbones, and base of your forehead.

For a nude eye, use your Pressed Base and place it on your lid  from lash line to brow bone. Then use the same Pressed Base color you used to contour your face and place it in your crease. Use a Precision Eye Pencil in brown or black/brown and create a tight, close line on your upper lashes only. Then load your lashes up with Water Resistant Mascara. Finish your look with a soft pink or nude Blush such as paradise, nectar or hibiscus and a matte Lipstick such as blush or natural.

Now for the brows! Comb through them with a Spoolie Brush to remove any extra product that might be on the hair. Then, choose your right brow color. I recommend trying to match your natural hair color or one shade lighter (Not darker… let’s keep it bold yet natural!). I like using the Brow Powder Duo because you get a more controlled and richer fill. Next, using the Lash Thickener and Conditioner, brush lightly on the hairs only! Do not adhere any gel product to the skin under your brows. Then use Brow Gel in your color and apply  in a zig zag motion. Shape the brows using a clean spoolie while still tacky to the touch. Lastly, use the Precision Eye Pencil in peach to outline your brows. This subtle highlight will really make the brows pop!

There you have my favorite balance bold brow look! Enjoy!!

Traveling to Colombia

Our International Educator, Kristin Walker, recently traveled to Bogota, Colombia on behalf of glo therapeutics.  We asked Kristin a couple of questions about her trip and she was kind enough to share some of her experiences.

gloProfessional: What was the purpose of your trip?
Kristin: To train the sales force for our new Colombian distributor and visit their office and warehouse. I also presented the glo therapeutics line to some of the dermatologists who will be carrying the products.

gloProfessional: Did you learn anything new about Colombian culture?
Kristin: I have always been a fan of Yucca for skin care (it’s in our Purifying Gel Cleanser) but it is also a  big part of the Colombian diet. They have Yucca bread which is delicious and is used in many of their traditional dishes.  Colombia is also known for its beautiful flowers which were everywhere.

gloProfessional: How does Colombia's culture compare to the United States when it comes to beauty and skin care products?
Kristin: It’s similar in many ways (of course I was in Bogota, which is a very large cosmopolitan city so things may be very different in other parts of the country). One thing that is different is that they have chains of  "skin stores."  These are in malls and retail areas, but are owned by dermatologists. They sell different brands of professional skin care, all of which the doctor's recommend.  People can walk in and buy most of the products, but some are "formula" or prescription only and the doctors send their patients there to pick up things like Retin A.

gloProfessional: What was your favorite meal?
Kristin: I was treated to some really good meals. It was coincidental that two great restaurants we went to were La Casa (the house) and La Casa Vieja (The old house).  The Old House served traditional Colombian food and we ate many courses.  I loved the a dish called Ajiaco which was a creamy potato soup with chicken garnished with avocado and capers. But everything was delicious! The empanada appetizers were  one of my favorite things and the fruit there is exotic and plentiful.  I had a delicious fruit drink for lunch made out of a fruit called Guanabana.
