Skin Care Tips for Your 50s

Guest Post by gloProfessional’s National Educator, Ami Shvartzman.

gloProfessional's Skin Care Tips for Your 50s

Women of a certain age… (or so the saying goes) are experiencing a time in their lives when they know who they are and are truly comfortable in their own skin. Unfortunately, the onset of menopause in our 50s can mean chaos for our skin. Things you may have noticed in your 40s (like fine lines, wrinkles and age spots) are now more pronounced. Hormonal changes tend to drop estrogen levels, causing our skin to become more sensitive which requires more attention. Don’t worry! There is still time to manage the aging process and fight back! Despite all of these changes you still have the power to keep your skin looking fresh! Here are some tips to look fab in your fifties:

Condition While You Clean – Keeping the skin clean is important at any age but gently cleansing the skin is especially important at this time. We suggest using a hydrating cleanser like glo therapeutics Conditioning Milk Cleanser which contains ingredients like Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter, Hyaluronic Acid and Rose Hip Seed Oil. This will help to treat and moisturize the skin while keeping it clean.

Boost Collagen  – Due to hormonal changes during this time we also tend to lose collagen in the skin. This leads to sagging, loss of elasticity and deeper wrinkling. Both Vitamin C and Copper Peptides stimulate collagen synthesis in the skin. Vitamin C in particular also provides protection against UV damage, reduces redness and promotes wound healing. Try glo therapeutics Ultra 15% Vitamin C Serum which also contains fantastic anti-aging peptides to help repair the skin. glo therapeutics Peptide + Defense is also a wonderful option as a lightweight moisturizer that contains peptides and natural protectants to help improve skin’s function and elasticity.

Don’t Forget the Neck –The neck is an area we often forget to treat but is a vital part of keeping skin looking fresh and youthful. There are less sebaceous glands in the neck and thus less oil production in this area which leads to dehydrated skin. Don’t let neck wrinkles creep up on you! Give glo therapeutics Neck Firming Serum a try for daily maintenance. This wonder product actually contains ingredients to help treat, firm and hydrate the neck area and acts as a skin brightener to assist with age spots as well.

Lighten Up – This tends to be a time when age spots and hyperpigmentation start to darken at the surface. Help fight age spots by using a Hydroquinone (a powerful skin lightener) serum like glotherapeutics Triple Action Serum. This wonder product also contains Retinol to assist with cell turnover and helps to decrease inflammation as well as Glycolic acid to help improve pigmentation, texture and tone.

Get More Advanced – It’s time to bring in the big guns. Get the ultimate in anti-aging products with glotherapeutics Cyto- Luxe line! The Cyto-Luxe line was created to be best and most luxurious line for anti-aging on the market. Utilizing Phytostem Technology and cutting edge ingredients these products not only feel great but also have clinical proof to show that they make a difference in the fight against wrinkles.  Try glo therapeutics Cyto-Luxe Serum which smooths the appearance of wrinkles by promoting collagen, supporting the skin and softening expression lines.  Cyto-Luxe Serum works synergistically with Cyto – Luxe Cream to increase the production of Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid. Lastly,  Cyto- Luxe Eye Cream increases collagen and elastin to target expression lines and reduce dryness around your eyes.

Q&A with Kate: Age Appropriate Tips for Products with Shimmer

Hi Kate! What are your guidelines for staying age appropriate when applying products with shimmer?

Kate: Shimmer in makeup can be a beautiful thing… in moderation. I have said before that there are no rules in makeup, and I stand by that, but there are a few guidelines or adjustments that we all have to make as we mature. For example, after three long years of putting obscene amounts of glitter on the sides of my eyes in middle school, I finally gave that up for a softer approach.

The main reason we want to start toning down shimmer as we age is because shimmer reflects light meaning the more shimmer we have on our face the more the light highlights our signs of aging. This does not mean you need to outlaw shimmer all together but moderation and formula are the things you need to look at when applying a shimmer based product. Since I don’t like putting an age limit to when you should adjust your makeup routine, I would start to pay attention to the way your makeup looks throughout the day. If midday you feel like you are looking a little tired (or your fine lines are not so fine) start to go down the less is more route with your shimmer application.

The words to look for in an age appropriate shimmer product are words like sheer, illuminating or brightening. Products with sheer, illuminating ingredients will diffuse light, giving the skin a soft, illuminated appearance. Products that use the words glitter or shiny tend  to reflect light, making everything look harsh and over exaggerated as we age. I love our Sheer Tint Illuminator! Its soft pink tone adds such a beautiful, subtle brightness to the skin without looking like you’re in line for a Justin Bieber concert.

For eye shadows, you can do a little shimmer, but choose colors that range from a soft bamboo or bone color to a medium taupe color. Anything too light or too dark will be too much. I love using Eye Shadow in sand pebble for a lid color, and then using a matte color on the brow bone for balance like bamboo or fawn.  If you really have a hard time letting go of shimmer, try putting it in places other than your face. For example, start with Dust 24K  in gold or bronze and mix with our Style Defining Hair Cream and pull the products through your dry strands for shimmery locks.

If you are in your twenties, now’s the time to grab our Highlighter, any of our shimmer Eye Shadows or  Dust 24K and go to town!

Reward Yourself!

January is almost over but that doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the towel on  your new year’s resolutions just yet! One of the best ways to stay motivated when trying to accomplish your goals is to reward yourself. Here are some of our ideas on how to reward yourself for how far you’ve already come!

Goal: Make It To the Gym Three Days a Week
Reward: Cute Workout Gear
Why it works: When you reward yourself with something like a new workout top it can serve as a reminder of how far  you’ve come and can help motivate you even further. Plus, according to Lindsey with Esprit de She, “When we dress for success, I’m confident there’s a hidden vibe from within that elevates our performance.”

Goal: Make More Time for Myself

Reward: Hour Long Massage
Why it Works: Every time you take some time for yourself by turning off the cell phone for 30 minutes, watching your favorite show on TV or taking a long bubble bath you are showing yourself that you are worth it. We suggest bumping it up a notch by treating yourself to a facial or massage once a month to reward yourself for simply being you.

Goal: Eat More Fruits and Veggies-
Reward: A healthy and decadent dessert
Why it Works: Congrats, you grabbed a bag a carrots instead of a bag of chips when the afternoon hunger pains started! Give yourself a treat by splurging on one of these decadent but healthy desserts:
Lavender-Scented Strawberries with Honey Cream (135 calories per serving)
Almond Stuffed Baked Apples with Caramel-Apple Sauce (185 calories per serving)
Broiled Pineapple Sundays (225 Calories per serving)

Goal: Take Better Care of Your Skin
Reward: Renew Serum
Why it Works: You vowed to remove your makeup, cleanse and moisturize every night and so far you’ve kept your promise. Adding a new product to your routine that feels special, like Renew Serum, will be further motivation to keep up your skin care routine. The anti-aging benefits are an added bonus!

What's On Your Beauty Shelf?

In our newest blog series “What’s On Your Beauty Shelf?” we will be asking some of the employees here at gloProfessional to divulge which products they use in their daily skin care, hair care and makeup routines as well as which products they can’t live without!

Name: Amy F.
Department: Digital Commerce and Media
Skin Type: I have very dry, flaky skin with occasional blemishes along my T-zone.

Morning Skin Care Routine: After I get out of the shower I tone my skin with the Conditioning Tonic followed by  15% Vitamin C and B5 Hydration. After letting that soak in while I brush my teeth I apply SPF 40 Facial Moisturizer. I burn easily so SPF year round is a must!

Evening Skin Care Routine: My average skin care routine in the evenings involves removing my eye makeup with Eye Makeup Remover then cleansing with Conditioning Milk Cleanser. A couple times a week I will use a physical exfoliant like the Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub as well followed by  the Conditioning Tonic. Next up is Renew Serum followed by Conditioning Hydration Cream or Restorative Cream which adds much needed moisture to my skin. Lastly, I apply Eye Restore and some Mint Balm and head to bed!

Hair Care Routine:
I have long, naturally curly hair that desperately needs some TLC. I use the Moisture Enhance Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner and Reparative Keratin Leave-In Treatment daily. Depending on whether I let my hair air dry or style, I use the Extreme Heat Protecting Serum and finish with the Infinite Shine Smoothing Oil.

Can’t Live Without Products: The two products I can’t live without are my Conditioning Hydration Cream and Reparative Keratin Leave-In treatment. I love how soft, fresh and moisturized my skin feels after using the Conditioning Hydration Cream. Plus, I can apply it under my makeup without any problems since isn’t heavy or sticky. The Keratin Leave-In treatment has done wonders for my hair! Whether I style it curly or straight it leaves my hair feeling hydrated, healthy and manageable!

Get Inspired with Lindsey Kurhajetz of Esprit de She

We are thrilled to be sponsors of Life Time Fitness’ premier athletic event series for women- Esprit de She - The Spirit of Her Race Series. These fun, social, and uplifting race events are fueled by the “power of her” mentality that lives beyond the finish line.

We’ve asked Esprit de She’s Brand Director, Lindsey Kurhajetz, to answer some of our questions about beauty, finding time to exercise and how to stay motivated and reach your goals. Read her answers and check out the Esprit de She website and Facebook page to find a race near you!

gloProfessional: How do you define beauty?
Lindsey: To me, beauty is a genuine smile. If you have a reason to smile, to share this joy with others, that’s beautiful. I also see beauty in humble and grateful minds.

gloProfessional: Who inspires you?
Lindsey: Being a keen observer of people, I tend to find inspiration in my everyday experiences. I’m inspired by people with passion – people who make a conscious decision to dedicate themselves to doing more and those who selflessly use their talents to enhance the lives of others. The BEST inspiration is witnessing those magnetic individuals who move through their daily lives and because of their characters, are naturally inspiring often without even knowing.

gloProfessional: How do you squeeze time for yourself into your busy schedule?
Lindsey: “Treat yourself well.” I saw this simple phrase on the back of someone’s t-shirt while running around the lake. This phrase has since been a reminder to me that in the midst of taking care of life, taking time for me is a paramount “must-do” in that equation. Each day brings a fun challenge to make this happen. I try ‘no cell phone’ car rides where I can listen to music and reflect on my day. I schedule workouts with friends to socialize and accomplish that feel-good gym session. I bake muffins on Sunday morning or cook meals for the week in the afternoon. I always have to remember to be my own wellness champion and to never feel guilty for taking this time.

gloProfessional: What advice do you have for women who are thinking about starting a new fitness routine?
Lindsey: Be realistic – and patient. Determine the available time you have to dedicate to your new routine and set your goal accordingly. Once your mission is defined, determine what tools you need to succeed, especially training tips for safe and progressive workouts. It’s easy to lose steam when pursuing a goal, but having visual reminders of what you’re aiming for can help keep you on track. Find those images – cut from magazines, or shared on Pinterest – that will light your ambitions on fire and keep you connected and motivated to your routine.

gloProfessional: What are your tips for staying stylish while working out?
Lindsey: Dress for success – famed words to live by as a working woman. The same is true in the gym. When we dress for success, I’m confident there’s a hidden vibe within that elevates our performance. Above all, I ensure that my gym bag is packed with layers that match. Sometimes the gym or outdoor weather varies and I like nothing more than to be prepared for any situation. I tend to purchase neutral accessories (headbands, hats, socks, etc.) and let the rest of the ensemble be colorful.

gloProfessional: What songs are on your current playlist?
Lindsey: Being completely honest, my runs jive to the same tunes – in order. I love looking forward to this tradition before I take to the street or treadmill. My line-up includes mostly upbeat tracks like Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina “Stereo Love,” Rihanna “We Found Love,” Enrique Iglesias “Tonight” and The Black Eyed Peas “I’ve Got a Feeling.” At times, the more subdued, calming tunes like Nickel Creek’s “When You Come Back Down” and Adele’s “Someone Like You” are just what I need after a long day.

Q&A with Kate McCarthy: Helping Your Daughter Pick the Right Makeup

Hi Kate! My teenage daughter is interested in beginning to wear makeup. I am open to letting her experiment but want her to look age appropriate. Do  you have tips or product recommendations for moms with teenage daughters?

Kate: I love working with young girls who are experiencing makeup for the first time.  I will never forget the first time I put makeup on! I was probably 12 playing with my mom’s makeup and had no clue what I was doing. After a little time passed my mother taught me the basics- light shadow on the eyes, a quick swipe of mascara, a little blush and of course lip gloss. For all of the moms out there wondering what products to look for and how much product to have them wear, here are some of my top tips:

First, start by finding a makeup line that markets itself with products that aid in the health of her skin and a positive self image.  Second, keep the less is more rule in mind.
  • For foundation, look for powders with healing properties in them and sun protection. glo’s Pressed Base is a great starter foundation for young teens. Using the fluffy Powder Brush will give light coverage, sun protection and, if she has acne issues, it will help eliminate inflammation and bacteria growth.
  • When it comes to eye shadow keep it simple. Only give the option of two different eye shadows- one base color and one lid color. The base color should be 1-2 shades lighter than her natural skin color. The lid color can be something with a little shimmer in soft peaches, pinks or taupes.
  • I always try and avoid eyeliner when working with girls under the age of 16. If your daughter is in her early teens, one layer of mascara will do the trick. If she is a little older, go for liners in the black/brown or navy color family.  She only needs a thin line tight to her upper lash line and should keep the lower lash line clean.
  • Blush or bronzer is a great way to add color to her complexion but make sure she takes it easy with the application. If she opts for bronzer show her the “3 trick”. Starting at the side of the forehead make the shape of a 3 swiping into the temple and onto the cheek. If she just wants blush, pick soft pinks or peaches that will add a subtle flush to her skin.
  • Gloss! If I had a penny for all the lip-gloss I went through in high school I would be a pretty wealthy lady!! Again, keep the colors soft and choose a formula that aids in hydration.

Here’s a helpful checklist/ guideline to use when purchasing products:
Pressed base with the Powder Brush
Eye Shadow Base in bamboo, diamond, or sand pebble
Eye Base Brush
Eye Shadow for lid in water lily, dusk, or the Eye Shadow Trio in ballerina.
Eye Blender Brush
Precise Micro Eyeliner in navy or Precision Eye Pencil in black/brown
        Water Resistant Mascara
        Blush in bellini or paradise
Lip Gloss in peony, star struck, or whisper

Showing your daughter the basics of makeup application can provide her with the tools to make her confident, have a positive body image and express herself.  Now, there is a fine line between using makeup as a positive addition to her personality and using it to mask or hide things she is not happy with so be sure to emphasize the importance of enhancing the natural beauty she already has!

Skin Care Tips for Your 40s

Guest Post by gloProfessional’s National Educator, Ami Shvartzman.

As women mature into their 40s they bring with them a certain wisdom and grace. While beautiful, this maturity can start to surface in our bodies in new ways.  During your 40s your body goes through profound hormonal changes which can have a major impact on your skin! Your skin may experience a greater loss of collagen and elastin, appear drier, thinner and more fragile and the lines and furrows around the face tend to get deeper. It’s also the time when dark spots and uneven tone really can start to surface. How can you help with all of these changes? Try the following tips!

1) Bump Up Your Daily Cleanser -
As at any age, cleansing your skin is your first step! Go beyond a basic cleanse and use glo therapeutics’ Hydrating Gel Cleanser which contains Lactic Acid to exfoliate dead skin cells and restores your complexion by hydrating and brightening the skin.

2) Combat Hyperpigmentation -
Skin pigment problems like sun spots and uneven tone become increasingly common in our 40’s. Products containing Hydroquinone can help cut down on any darkness or blotchiness in the skin. The glo therapeutics Lightening Serum is the perfect blend of 2% Hydroquinone, Lactic Kojic and Azelaic acids which aid in reducing pigmentation.  Vitamin C also aids in decreasing hyperpigmentation and is a great anti-inflammatory. It improves elasticity, helps build collagen and provides extra protection against UV damage. Try glo therapeutics Ultra 15% Vitamin C Serum which also includes cutting-edge peptides to assist with stimulating collagen synthesis.

3) Reconsider Your Skin Type –
Teens are not the only ones with acne! Oil production tends to slow down as we go through a number of hormonal changes in our 40’s. It’s important to note that breakouts may occur during this time of life due to changes in hormones. We suggest keeping glo therapeutics’ Renew Serum handy for a great Salicylic Acid acne spot treatment that also contains  Alpha Hydroxy Acid and Retinol.  Dry skin also becomes more common during this stage of life, even if you formerly were someone with oily skin. Advanced B5 hydration contains Hyaluronic Acid, which is a water binder, it holds and maintains up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It is a great hydrator without being heavy!

4) Treat Texture -
Using Retinol to help speed up that cell turnover rate is key! Retinol is an anti-aging ingredient derived from Vitamin A which encourages a younger and more radiant complexion by assisting with cell turnover and cell regeneration. Tretinol 0.5% is a powerful Retinol serum in a waterless base that helps prevent new wrinkles from forming while resurfacing and rejuvenating skin! Super Serum is another powerful all around anti-aging serum that contains a small amount of Retinol and several peptides to help to build the skin’s matrix. It’s the ultimate in anti-aging!

5) Take Care of your eyes -
This is an extremely important time to take care of your eyes!  Your windows to the soul are a very delicate part of your body and you may notice fine lines and wrinkles beginning to form in this area. Help treat crow’s feet with glo therapeutics’ 7.5% Vitamin C Eye Gel. This product  uses the power of L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to help reverse fine lines and help prevent darkening in the eye area. Top this with the ultimate in phyto stem technology, Cyto-luxe Eye Cream. This fantastic eye cream increases collagen and elastin, reduces dryness and targets any unwanted expression lines!

5 Ways to Break Out of Your Winter Makeup Rut

If cold winter temperatures and short days are starting to bring you down, fight the winter blues with some pretty updates to your makeup routine. Try these five easy pick-me-ups that will instantly improve your mood!

5 Ways to Break Out of Your Winter Makeup Rut

1) Add An All Over Glow- Add a drop of Sheer Tint Illuminator to your Sheer Tint Base or Protective Liquid Foundation. The subtle light reflecting particles in the Illuminator will give your skin a warm, natural luminescence.

2) Give Your Cheeks a Pinch of Color- Use a cheek tint like Tint for Cheeks and Lips to give your cheeks an extra pop of color. This will brighten your  complexion and add a healthy, natural flush to your face.

3) Give Yourself a Facelift- Add a touch of Highlighter to the upper corners of your cheekbones, brow bones, and inner corner of your eyes. Then using the Texture Brush and Bronze in sunlight add a slight contour just below your cheekbones and on the top of your top nose. This will give the illusion of higher cheekbones and a brighter complexion.

4) Try a New Lipstick Color- Few things can brighten your mood as fast as a great shade of Lipstick. Try some of these bold but beautiful colors: bali, jamaica, cabaret, or aubergine.

5) Show A Little Skin- Even though it’s winter you can still show a little skin! Add a little Body Glisten or Body Bronzer to your lotion for a subtle temporary tan.

Skin Care Tips for Your 30s

Guest Post by gloProfessional’s National Educator, Ami Shvartzman.

30 may well be the new 20 but looking like a 20 year old requires a bit more maintenance! Dull, dehydrated skin, fine lines and sun damage often start to appear in our 30’s and bad habits are usually the culprit. This is the time to fess up to your skin care sins and enhance your current skin care regimen.

Try the following:
1.       Clean, Exfoliate, Brighten - Cleansing is by far the most important step in skin care because clean skin is essential for healthy skin. Dull skin can make us look older than we actually are so actively combat dullness with an exfoliant like Daily Polishing Cleanser. This gentle powder cleanser and exfoliant  contains Sepiwhite (a lightening agent to help eliminate darkness in the skin) and it also travels wonderfully. Talk about a multitasker!

2.       Speed Up Cell Turnover - As we move into our 30’s our cell renewal rate tends to slow down. Exfoliating with ingredients like Alpha Hydroxy Acid and Retinol help remove dead skin cell layers which helps speed up skin renewal! Try a serum like Retinol CS - it’s a great combo of 3% Retinol, 5% Glycolic Acid (a wonderful alpha hydroxy acid) and several brighteners for an overall rejuvenating effect!

3.     Show Antioxidants Some Love - Antioxidants, or miracle workers as I like to call them, help repair and prevent damage to the skin. They also increase collagen production, promote healing and help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Try 15% Vitamin C to help protect the skin against sun damage, cell damage and to reduce discoloration.

4.       Gulp It Down - Drinking enough water is essential for the overall health of the body but is specifically important to the skin in our anti-aging quest. Drinking enough water gives our skin a fresh, radiant glow so give the largest organ in your body what it needs and drink at least 64 ounces per day!

5.       Nourish It - Not only is hydrating the skin internally by drinking enough water extremely important but it’s also important to hydrate it externally as well.  Since hydrated skin shows fewer signs of aging, we suggest increasing your use of moisturizers and hydrating serums. Applying a topical hydrator like B5 Hydration helps restore the skin’s suppleness with the perfect balance of nourishment and hydration.

6.       Protect and Strengthen Skin - Hopefully at this stage you are wearing sunscreen on a daily basis because we all know by now that  unprotected sun exposure will cause wrinkles!  Now is the time to bump it up a notch and reapply as needed throughout the day! Try SPF 40 Facial Moisturizer which contains physical blocks like zinc and iron oxides. It also has Shea Butter and Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate the skin and Copper Peptides for an anti-aging effect.

7.    Look Well Rested (Even If You’re Not) - Between your work schedule, keeping up with kids and traveling, your thirties can be one of the busiest times of your life!  It’s also a time when dark circles start to develop! Using products like Vital Eye Cream can help cut down on puffiness and dark under eye circles while hydrating the under eye area.
