Q&A with Kate: How-To Fix Common Beauty Blunders

Q: Hi Kate! How do you fix some common beauty blunders in a hurry?

Kate: As busy women on the go, sometimes we can get a little careless when applying our makeup. Instead of having to start from scratch, here are some quick tips on how to fix some of the most common beauty blunders!

gloProfessional How-To: Fix Three Common Beauty Blunders

Beauty Blunder #1: Messy Mascara
Quick Fix: Use a q-tip and warm water to clean mascara from your water line.
For Mascara blunders on the face or eyes, wait for it to dry completely. After it’s dry, use a clean eye base brush to flake off the residue.

Beauty Blunder #2: Too Much Blush
Quick Fix: Grab your Blender Brush and some Pressed Base in your color then neutralize the Blush by applying a little Pressed Base to the cheeks.
Beauty Blunder #3: Creased Eye Shadow
Quick Fix: Use your finger and gently blend the crease. Then, using an Eye Blender Brush apply some Perfecting Powder to the eye to soak up excess oil.

The Dos and Don'ts of Makeup Brush Cleaning

The Dos and Don'ts of Makeup Brush Cleaning

Spring cleaning- whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that sometimes a thorough scrub, soak or cleanse is desperately needed. This week we are taking a deeper look at ways to clean, organize, and tidy up your beauty routine. First up, a look at the Dos and Don’ts of brush cleaning!

Cleaning your brushes is a crucial step towards clean, healthy skin. When we apply our makeup with brushes, the oils from the face get in between the bristles and can generate bacteria growth and germs. Keeping your brushes clean (especially your foundation brush!) will reduce your chances of break-outs and increase your chances of clearer skin! Here are our top tips on how to clean makeup brushes. Did we leave something out? Tell us your tips in the comments below.

Brush Cleaning Dos

  • Do wash your brushes at least every 2 weeks to avoid bacteria build up.
  • Do use a gentle shampoo (such as baby shampoo) to deep clean your brushes.
  • Do clean your brushes after each use with Brush Cleaner when working with clients.
  • Do gently re-mold each brush into it’s original shape if necessary.

Brush Cleaning Don’ts

  • Don’t completely submerge your brushes in water. This can cause the wood to swell and crack. It can also loosen the glue that holds the brushes in place.
  • Don’t dry your brushes upright. This can trap water in the base of the brush which can cause rotting of the wood.
  • Don’t allow water to enter the barrel of the handle. Water trapped in the barrel can rot the adhesive, leading to an unpleasant odor and brush hair loss.
  • Don’t squeeze the bristles dry as this can alter the shape of the brush.

5 Common Questions About Keratosis Pilaris

5 Common Questions About Keratosis Pilaris

What is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis Pilaris is a common skin condition that affects close to 40% of the adult population. This skin condition is characterized by rough patches of skin and small bumps on arms, thighs, chest, cheeks and buttocks that often resemble goose bumps. While this condition is hardly ever painful it can be very frustrating to treat.

What causes it?
Keratosis Pilaris occurs when there is a buildup of keratin under the skin. Keratin is a necessary, hard protein that protects your skin from infection and harmful substances. This buildup of Keratin can cause a plug to form which blocks the opening of the hair follicle causing a hard bump to form at the surface of the skin. What causes the build up of keratin is still unknown. Often times dry skin can make the symptoms worse but dry skin is not a proven cause of Keratosis Pilaris.

What are the symptoms?
There are three common types of Keratosis Pilaris. Keratosis pilaris rubra is characterized by red, inflamed bumps which can be on arms, head, legs. Keratosis pilaris alba’s symptoms include rough, bumpy skin with no irritation and keratosis pilaris rubra faceii  involves a reddish rash on the cheeks. Occasionally these bumps can be itchy but are usually not painful. When the bumps become inflamed they can cause mild scarring.

Who does it effect?
Most cases of Keratosis Pilaris are found in young children or adolescents and many people have improved symptoms when they reach their 30s. It is more commonly seen in  women than men and tends to become worse in dry climates.

How can it be treated?
While most symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris clear up on their own overtime there are things that can be done to help treat the symptoms. If you suffer from Keratosis Pilaris be sure to keep your skin moisturized and clean. After cleansing we suggest using a moisturizing product like Body Butter after gently patting your skin dry. Often times the symptoms are irritated by over-exfoliating or scrubbing in an effort to remove the plugs. This can cause the bumps to become inflamed which could lead to scarring. It’s important to use a product with lactic acid to help gently remove the keratin buildup.

glo therapeutics designed the new Therapeutic Body Duo for those of you with Keratosis Pilaris in mind. The mild exfoliant contains Bamboo Stem Extract and hydroxy acids, which offer light-weight exfoliation that will help remove the buildup of keratin and the cream softens the appearance of discolored, textured areas and reduce redness.

Q&A with Kate McCarthy: Spring 2013

Q: Hi Kate! I am loving the new Spring 2013 products! Which products are  you most excited about?

Kate: Ahhhh Spring! My second favorite season (next to fall of course)! What I love about spring are the smells, the colors that come back from a long winter’s sleep, and most of all I LOVE seeing new products that emulate said changes.

Q&A with Kate McCarthy: Spring 2013

This season glo launched a handful of goodies for spring 2013. What I am MOST excited about are our new Lipsticks and Lip Tints. Both give major hydration and awesome color. The Lipstick I never knew I couldn’t live without until now? Lipstick in socialite. It’s Barbie pink meets a girl with an attitude! You can dress this color up or down, make it punk or girly- no matter how you wear it, your skin tone will be complemented. I like to pair it with our Lip Tint in clearly pink. These Lip Tints have Kiwi Seed Oil and Meadow Foam as their main ingredients which provides major hydration! You get a very sheer color with super slick shine!

What else am I excited for? Our Cyto-Luxe Face Essence. Packed with antioxidants, detoxifying ingredients and super hydrators this oil leaves my skin baby soft, smooth, and firm! I love putting it on before I go to bed and the scent is subtle but oh so decadent!

What are your Spring 2013 favorites?!? Tell us in the comments below!

What's On Your Beauty Shelf?

glominerals beauty makeup

Name: Aly W.
Department: Digital Commerce and Media
Skin Type: Combo(a little dry in winter months)

Morning Skin Care Routine: I’m usually a bit rushed in the mornings so I try to keep my skin care routine as simple (and quick) as possible! I wash my face with one of my favorite glo Cleansers depending on how my skin is feeling that day— Conditioning Milk Cleanser (if it’s feeling a little dry), and Clear Acne Cleanser, Daily Polishing Cleanser, or Refresh Facial Polish on days when my skin can use a little exfoliation. After toning with either the Conditioning Tonic or Purifying Tonic, I use Ultra 15% Vitamin C and follow up with Advanced B5 Hydration and Oil Free SPF 40+ which are both high in Hyaluronic Acid to keep my skin hydrated throughout the day.

Evening Skin Care Routine: Before bed, I use Conditioning Milk Cleanser and remove my makeup. My eyes can become easily irritated when removing makeup so the gentle Eye Makeup Remover formulation is perfect for me. After cleansing and removing my makeup, I follow up with a serum. In the summer months, I can’t live without Lightening Serum. It’s perfect for lightening sun spots on my forehead and nose from sun damage (from the days when I didn’t take such diligent care of my skin).  Since this product contains Hydroquinone, it makes sunscreen an even more important part of my morning routine. A few times a week, I apply Renew Serum before bed- it’s my secret to waking up with a wonderful glow the next morning!

Makeup Routine: Like my skin care routine, I try to keep my makeup routine as efficient as possible. On most days Loose Base beautifully covers any imperfections with a barely there look. I rely on Camouflage Oil-Free and Protective Liquid Foundation Satin II on the days that I have breakouts or need a little extra coverage. Next I add a swipe of Bronze with the Powder Brush or Shimmer Brick with the Fan Brush on my cheekbones for a healthy looking complexion. After applying Mascara and Mint Balm, my makeup is done! I ALWAYS set my makeup with Moist Hydration Mist. The hydrating mist is just the refresher I need to get me out the door and off to face the day!

Can’t Live Without Products: I am so glad that I don’t have to live without my favorite glotherapeutics Cleansers and glo minerals Loose Base! Knowing that every time I cleanse my face and put on foundation, I am improving the health of my skin just feels so good. Taking good care of my body and maintaining good health is important to me, and using glo products means that I am taking the best possible care of my skin too!

All New Cyto-luxe: Face Essence

Powerful and luxurious yet lightweight and soft, glo therapeutics Cyto-luxe Face Essence is the perfect combination of essential oils and phytostem technology. This groundbreaking treatment promotes detoxification and helps your skin build a defense system against environmental toxins. With ingredients like Resistem, which promotes cell lifespan extension and tissue regeneration, and Sqisandryl, which is an extract from the berries of Schisandra chinensis, this product is clinically proven to strengthen the protein bonding structures that work to tighten the skin.

Perhaps the most luxurious element of this treatment is the nourishing and softening ingredient- Argan Oil. Argan Oil protects the skin against wrinkles that appear due to premature aging. We recommend using Cyto-luxe Face Essence in conjunction with Cyto-Luxe Mask for the ultimate rejuvenating, detoxification and strengthening benefits. Apply after the mask twice a week to supplement your regular Cyto-luxe routine.  Lightly shake the bottle before to ensure the oils are properly mixed before each use and apply sparingly for best results.
