glo How-To: Define Your Brows

As all wise beauty gurus know, a well-groomed and defined eyebrow can really frame the face and complete a look. Since our eyebrows are as unique to us as the shape of our lips or color of our eyes, we’ve created the Brow Collection kit to help you define your perfect brow. This customizable kit comes in taupe or brown and makes defining your brows simple. Just follow these easy steps, as modeled by National Educator Janeena, and create your perfect brow.
eyebrow tutorial glominerals

Step 1- Choose the stencil that best compliments your face shape, and shows as much of your natural brow in the cutout of the stencil as possible* .

Step 2- Hold stencil of choice over brow and apply customized brow powder with Angled Brow Brush.
Step 3- Remove the stencil and brush through brows with spoolie brush. (The spoolie brush can also be used to soften color and groom unruly brows.)
Step 4- Tweeze any hair not in defined brow.
Step 5- Lightly deposit a minimal amount of eyebrow wax onto the Angled Brow Brush and brush over brows to maintain shape.
Step 6- Enhance the arches of eyebrows and open up the eye by patting the highlighter under brow bone. ( Place highlighter on the inner corner of eyes for a more dramatic look.)  This can be done on top of or under eye shadow.
*Expert Tip: To find the correct placement for the stencil hold the angled brow brush vertically from the center of the nostril to find the starting point of your brow. The starting line marked on the stencil should lay vertical at the head of your brow, the middle line indicates the center of the brow and the arching point. The end line should indicate your eyebrows stopping point.

Q&A with Kate and Janeena: Exciting Announcements!

2013 has been a busy year here at glo! We are busy developing advanced new products (Fall will be launching before we know it and we are obsessed with the new products!) and we’ve expanded our global reach to close to 30 countries (we will be selling directly to Canadian consumers soon!). In addition to these positive developments, we have some exciting news to share!

Kate McCarthy has recently moved into a new role -  glominerals Product Manager! This means she will use her 10+ years of experience as a makeup artist to create the best makeup products possible for glominerals. This also means she will be traveling less to keep up with her busy new role which is why we asked Janeena Billera to join our team as a National Educator. We are very excited to have Janeena on our team as she comes to us with more than 10 years of experience as well!

Janeena will help develop fun new looks and posts on all things beauty related! Kate and Janeena sat down and chatted with each other about their new roles and here’s what they had to say!

Kate: Welcome to the glominerals team! Which products are you already obsessed with?

Janeena: Well anyone that knows me knows that I am a sucker for cream blush and have tried every different brand under the sun. I love cream blush because of its multi-purpose qualities that give me a dewy flushed glow. I have to admit that as soon as I tried glo’s Cream Blush  I knew my search for the perfect cream blush was complete. Another one of my new found obsessions is Face Essence. This product is absolutely amazing and my dry skin soaks it up without  hesitation. I love mixing this with my Protective Liquid Foundation in Satin II to give me a soft dewy finish. I also use Face Essence at night as my moisturizer.

Congrats to you on the new role! What are you most excited about with your new position?

Kate: Thank you! I am most excited to learn the entire process that goes into making one product from start to finish. I really had no idea how much goes into creating the perfect blush! I love the idea that science and beauty go hand in hand and I am learning A LOT!

You’ve been in the industry for over 10 years! What inspired you to become a makeup artist?

Janeena: I started out by painting on canvases, then quickly realized I was playing the role of a struggling artist, and needed to make a quick change without compromising my love for art. So I started to apply my painting skills to the face! As soon as I put brush to skin I knew this was what I was meant to do. So I would say that my inspiration is art in general. I see  the face as a unique blank canvas and my medium is makeup!

Without giving away all of your secrets, what can we look forward to seeing with the upcoming Fall launch?

Kate: Fall is pretty exciting! We have some new items coming into the line that will knock your socks off! I think people will be very excited about one item in particular... the only clue I am giving is, Diamonds....

What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received?

Janeena: In the past I was repeatedly being reminded  from one of my mentors the cliche phrase “less is more”. To me this meant nothing until I really got the hang of applying makeup, and what it really meant to make someone feel and look beautiful. Once I started to come to terms with this phrase is when I started hitting higher peaks instead of lower valleys in my makeup career.

We can’t wait to see what beautiful and creative things the lovely ladies on our Education Team come up with!

Q&A with Kate: Perfecting Powder v. Finishing Powder

Hi Kate! Can you explain the difference between the Perfecting Powder and the Matte Finishing Powder?

Which One Is Right for You? Perfecting Powder or Matte Finishing Powder

Kate: There are many different types of setting powders out there but allow me to introduce my personal favorite setting powder- glominerals Perfecting Powder. I use this on a daily basis to help keep oil at bay, and keep my makeup in place.  So which formula of finishing powder is right for you?

Perfecting Powder is a clay base, translucent pressed powder. This means that this powder does not deposit any color on your skin. It simply absorbs any excess oil, adds protection and keeps your makeup in place (especially during these hot summer months). This powder is your multi-use setting powder and it works for all for all skin types.  Perfecting Powder is also great when used to set a dramatic eye look or everyday eyeliner. Start by using an Eye Blender Brush and tap Perfecting Powder on top of your liner to ensure it does not transfer onto your lid during the day.
The Matte Finishing Powder is a rice base with maximum oil absorbing abilities. This product does deposit color, meaning a little bit of warmth is applied to the skin. For those with extremely oily skin, this is the powder for you!

Five Facts About Sunscreen

Our friends at American Spa Magazine really know their stuff when it comes to skin care. We particularly enjoyed their recent article, “Practicing Safe Sun.” This article breaks down the importance of using a mineral, or physical, sunscreen and we encourage everyone to read the article! Here's a brief recap of 5 important points.

1) We all know that skin cancer is a serious problem but this fact really puts it in perspective: One person in the United States dies from melanoma every hour. In addition, the National Cancer Institute blames artificial UV sources as the major cause for the rapid rise in malignant melanoma in young women.

2) Sunscreens come in two forms: Chemical and Physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays while physical formulas deflect ultraviolet rays. Which formulation is best for you? Most dermatologist will recommend a physical sunscreen because of  their ability to block both UVA and UVB rays. In addition, they are gentler on the skin and will last longer in the bottle.

3)  Look for sunscreens that block both UVB rays, which cause our skin to burn, and UVA rays, which create sunspots, wrinkles, and sagging skin. However, it’s important to remember that both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer.

4) Avoid sunscreens that contain an SPF content lower than 15. Sunscreens that have an SPF of 15 or less can help prevent your skin from burning but won’t protect your skin against skin cancer or aging.

5) Sunscreens that contain ingredients like green tea and vitamin C not only help protect your skin but they also help reverse the signs of aging. Try our Protective Powder which has an SPF of 30 plus essential vitamins and nutrients for overall skin health.

What's Your Vitamin C IQ?

What's Your Vitamin C IQ?

THE SCIENCE OF VITAMIN C AND ANTI-AGING

Over the past several years, you may have come across research into something called free radicals and how they relate to the aging process. Free radicals are molecules that are missing an electron in their outer rings, making them unstable. Because the free radical molecule is unstable, it will "steal" electrons from the nearby atoms in healthy cells, creating another free radical and setting off a cycle of free radical creation, which ultimately results in destruction of healthy cells and tissue. We are exposed to these free radicals from things like UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoke and stress. Free radicals are thought to cause a number of skin conditions related to aging, including skin darkening, inflammation, and the breakdown of collagen and elastin – elements that make the skin plump and youthful. Years of exposure to free radicals causes our skin to show signs of aging.
Antioxidant Behavior

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REPAIR SKIN AND PROTECT IT FROM FURTHER DAMAGE:

Advancements and discoveries in modern skin care have resulted in a solution in the form of antioxidants. Antioxidants are the heroes that come along to protect our skin from free radicals – they have the potential to slow the signs of aging. As an antioxidant, L-ascorbic Acid (also known as Vitamin C) has garnered serious attention. Research shows that it stimulates collagen production, while simultaneously working as an anti-inflammatory to speed up wound healing. While eating your citrus every day is certainly healthy, it alone will not be effective in the fight against the aging process. When ingested, a very small percentage of Vitamin C actually reaches the skin. Topical application is preferred for maximum skin care benefit, and L-ascorbic Acid is the only form of Vitamin C that penetrates the skin. Start your skin care routine by applying topical Vitamin C every morning for protection against free radical damage, and start seeing results in as little as 8-12 weeks.
What to look for in a Vitamin C Serum

WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A VITAMIN C SERUM:

The right pH: Studies show pH needs to be between 2.0 - 3.8 in order for Vitamin C serums to be effectively absorbed into the skin - choose a serum in this range. All of our glo therapeutics Vitamin C serums fall in this range for maximum efficacy.

The right form of Ascorbic Acid: Clinical studies show the chirally correct form of Ascorbic Acid is the only form of Vitamin C the body recognizes and therefore can utilize to help support collagen synthesis. Choose a Vitamin C serum that uses L-ascorbic Acid. You guessed right, all glo therapeutics Vitamin C serums utilize L-ascorbic Acid.

Added benefits: Supporting ingredients can boost the antioxidant benefits of Ascorbic Acid. Consider a serum like Ultra 15% Vitamin C which harnesses advanced supporting ingredients. Protect your protection: The dark amber bottle our Vitamin C serums come in protects the serum from sunlight to preserve its efficacy.

Q&A with Kate: Eye Shadow Trio

Q: Hi Kate! What are your 3 favorite Eye Shadow Trios and how do you apply them?

Kate: Here are my three favorite Eye Shadow Trios:

Eye Shadow Trio in sweet ‘n’ spicy– This is the little trio that could. I think it’s underrated because people are intimidated by the soft orange shade but I promise this trio works for everyone! It is a great alternative to the Eye Shadow Trio in sandstone because you still get a very natural eye with a tiny bit of edge to it. I start by applying the lightest shade all over (lash line to brow bone). Then using the taupe shade, I use my Textured Eye Brush to softly place the shade in my crease. Then using my Eye Base Brush, I apply the orange shade to my lid. Depending on my mood, I will sometimes place Eye Shadow in opal down first to make the orange pop a bit more! I also use the orange and my Smudge Brush and apply to my lower lash line.

Eye Shadow Trio in coffee – This one is the best basic, multi-tasker!  This trio can make a natural day look, a dramatic chocolate brown smoky eye and  the dark brown makes a beautiful liner. It’s perfect  for any eye shape, skin tone or eye color! This one is one that every woman needs… The possibilities are endless!

Eye Shadow Trio in amethyst – I love using this Eye Shadow Trio to create the perfect summer smoky eye with a few other basic Eye Shadow shades! To start, I use twig as a base, applying it to my lid first (lash line to crease). Then, I apply  Eye Shadow in kona  to my crease. Next, I grab the Eye Shadow Trio in amethyst and start with the darkest shade and my Eye Base Brush. I stipple (tap) it on my lid (on top of both twig and kona) then, using my Eye Blender Brush, I apply the medium purple shade to my crease, blending lightly. Using Crease Brush I place the lightest purple on the inner corner of my crease and lid. To complete the look, I use a clean Eye Blender Brush and blend and finish by placing Eye Shadow in diamond on my brow bone to highlight. I use a Smudge Brush to place the darkest purple on my lower lash line and I have a unique smoky eye that is perfect for summer!
