Breast Cancer Awareness Month

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Because breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, it’s almost impossible to come in contact with someone whose life hasn’t been forever changed by breast cancer. Whether it’s yourself, a friend, neighbor, sister or daughter- we are all impacted by breast cancer. The good news is that the death rate from breast cancer is steadily declining thanks to new treatments, early detection and the commitment to education from organizations like the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

We are passionate about the fight to end breast cancer and to show our support we have two special edition products launching in October. A portion of proceeds from Special Edition Bronze Kiss  and Restorative Cream will go directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and its mission to save lives through early detection by providing mammograms to women in need.

Bronze Kiss is a Special Edition highlighter/bronzer duo that leaves skin with a soft, luminous glo. We recommend applying the bronzer lightly all over the face, then, with a small, soft brush, apply the highlighter to cheekbones, brow bones and the inner corner of the eyes. The results are stunning!

We chose our richest, most nourishing cream for this very special edition. Restorative Cream is a luxurious face cream that delivers moisture and skin-strengthening antioxidants to protect and repair fragile skin. It’s the perfect way to pamper yourself while moisturizing, nourishing, and repairing your skin!

glo How-To: Summer Skin Repair

Summer has now come and gone with this week marking the first official week of fall. If you’re like most of us and spent the summer enjoying the sun, your skin might be in need of some serious TLC. Here are some tips for helping your skin recover from summer.

Summer Skin Problem: Dark Spots - Too much time in the sun can cause existing dark spots or Hyperpigmentation to darken. By the end of the summer your sun spots can be more noticeable than ever.
Solution: Brightening or Lightening Serum- Using a serum with lightening or brightening ingredients will help diminish the appearance of dark spots, hyperpigmentation and freckling. Click here for step by step instruction on reducing the appearance of your age spots.

Summer Skin Problem: Sunburn- Miss a spot when applying your SPF 40+? It happens to the best of us.
Solution: Remedy Gel and Redness Relief Powder-  Help treat, heal and cover sunburns with this dynamic duo. Remedy Gel will help reduce inflammation and tenderness while Redness Relief Powder works to cover up any surface redness with addition healing properties like Honey Suckle and Green Tea Extract.

Summer Skin Problem: Wrinkles - Between prolonged sun exposure, dry climates and busy schedules, our skin can take a beating in the summer causing wrinkles to look more pronounced.
Solution: Skin Firming Cream- Give your skin the moisture it needs and repair damaged skin with Skin Firming Cream. This luxurious cream helps regulate your skin’s moisture content while firming and repairing weathered skin.

Does your hair also need some love after the summer? For dry, brittle locks caused by chlorine and sun exposure we recommend adding the Intense Recovery Conditioning Mask to your hair care routine.

One Trend, Two Ways: Berry Lips

September is an exciting time of year for those of us in the beauty business! Fall products are launching and all of the major magazines are publishing their big September issues. This makes it the perfect time to transition your makeup. Because September is such a transitional time, we like to pick colors that strike the right balance between the jewel tone hues of fall and the bright pops of color we love for summer. Our solution is a pretty berry lip. Janeena shows us two ways to wear this pretty trend.

Janeena (on the right) applied Precision Lip Pencil in vino to her whole lip and dabbed Liquid Lips in cherry on top for a glossy look that is appropriate for day. On the left we opted for a bit more drama. First she applied Lipstick in bordeaux then added the Royal Lip Crayon in regal ruby for extra dimension.  We love both looks berry much (and we couldn’t resist the pun)!

glo How-To: Photo Ready Makeup

Guest post by National Makeup Artist, Janeena Billera. Before working at glo Janeena worked in LA with celebrity clients including Rosario Dawson, Joan Jett, Whitney Port, Margaret Cho and Kendra Wilkinson.

As a National Makeup Artist and Educator for glo, I am repeatedly asked if the product and application for photo ready makeup differs from an average everyday makeup look. I always respond with a big YES! There is a huge difference between applying makeup for photos versus makeup for everyday wear. If you —or anyone else— are to be photographed be mindful of a few very important things when applying: coverage, placement, blending, and color/texture choices.

1) Placement- Correct placement is extremely important because it can accentuate bone structure and add depth. This will add much needed dimension to the photos.
2)   Blending - Lines of demarcation can really stand out in a photo so be sure to blend, blend and blend some more.
3) Color and Texture - Picking the correct colors and textures will make a huge difference in photos. The right colors can make a dull complexion look radiant and help make eyes, lips, and cheeks really pop!
4)   Coverage - I always apply photo ready makeup about 10% heavier than I would for an everyday look.

Side note: it is always helpful to know a little about lighting and the location of where the photographs will be shot. Keep all of this in mind when creating your look. Here are the steps I took to create this photo-ready look that’s perfect for a studio with professional lighting.

Step 1: Prep

Step 2: Cover

Step 3: Contour/Highlight
  • Using the Angled Blush Brush apply Bronze in sunkiss or sunlight to hairline, hollows of cheeks, jawline blending down the neck, both sides of the bridge of nose, and in eye crease.
  • Using the highlight shade from the Shimmer Brick in luster and the Blush Brush, highlight directly next to each place of contour- down bridge of the nose, middle of forehead, tops of cheekbones, middle of chin, and above cupid's bow.

Step 4: Adding color

Step 5: Lips
  • Line your lips with the Lip Filler Pencil to prevent bleeding.
  • Apply Precise Micro Lipliner to whole lip filling into the center. I like to use delilah.
  • Apply Lipstick of choice but be aware that the colors can photograph differently depending on the lighting. I used a combination of blush and natural.
  • Apply Gloss of choice.  I used naked
  • Finish by misting entire face with  Moist Hydration Mist to set the look.

glo How-To: Early Autumn Eyes

We love those first few weeks of fall when a few leaves have started to change their color and the weather is feeling crisp. With summer coming to an official end in a couple weeks, we are starting to shift our focus to the earth and jewel tones that we often associate with fall. Kate McCarthy created this gorgeous look with this special time of year in mind.  Not only is this look perfect for early Autumn, it’s easy to recreate with our Jeweled Eye Pencils. These pencils go on smoothly and blend with each other seamlessly- perfect for creating stunning looks in a hurry!

To recreate this look, start by applying Lid Primer then follow the steps:
Step One: Using the Eye Base Brush, cover your entire lid up to your brow bone with Eye Shadow in opal.
Step Two: Apply Jeweled Eye Pencil in antique from lashline to crease.
Step Three: Apply Jeweled Eye Pencil in baroque to your crease.
Step Four: Blend the two shades together using the Eye Blender Brush.
Step Five: Apply Jeweled Eye Pencil in merlot along your bottom lash line.
Step Six: Line your waterline with Precise Micro Eyeliner in black. Finish with Lash Boosting Mascara.

What's On Your Beauty Shelf?

Name: Lindsay G
Department: Marketing
Skin Type: Combination Normal to Oily (with a tendency to break out!)

Morning Skin Care Routine:
I like to keep my morning skin care routine as quick and easy as possible! I start with cleansing my face with the Purifying Gel Cleanser – the salicylic acid really helps keep my skin clear throughout the day and it smells absolutely amazing, which helps wake me up! I follow with the Purifying Tonic. Working in the skincare industry, we all know how important Vitamin C is, so I never forget to apply 15% Vitamin C Serum. After letting the Vitamin C absorb into my skin, I apply B5 Hydration, some Eye Restore and finish with Oil Free SPF 40+. This is the best facial sunscreen I have ever tried. It lightly hydrates and doesn’t make me break out. Plus it works really well as a primer for my makeup!
Evening Skin Care Routine: I spend extra quality time on my skin in the evening. My go-to cleansers in the evening are the Purifying Gel Cleanser or the 10% Glycolic Cleanser* when I am broken out, however I am OBSESSED with the new Cyto-luxe Cleanser since its recent debut. This cleanser has it all – it smells great, cleanses perfectly, leaves my skin feeling soft AND removes makeup. I have started incorporating the Cyto-luxe Cleanser into my routine about 2-3 times per week. Normally, I use Purifying Tonic after I cleanse, but sometimes I use the Clear Complexion Pads when I feel like I need something a bit stronger. Every other night I apply Renew Serum and wait at least 30 minutes for it to absorb. This serum is my savior. It has evened out my skin and really leaves my skin glowing in the morning. If I am broken out, I apply Clear Anti-Blemish Treatment and will apply Healing Gel if I’m recovering from a break out. I then apply Oil Free Moisturizer and Cyto-luxe Eye Cream and head to bed.
Hair Care Routine (or Makeup): My makeup routine in the morning is quite like my skin care routine – quick and easy! I start with glo minerals Under Eye Primer, the light-reflecting pigments in this product lighten up any dark circles I have and then I apply my Concealer Under Eye. For foundation, I use either Pressed Base or Loose Base depending on what type of finish I’m feeling for the day (semi-matte or dewy). I dust on some Shimmer Brick in gleam using the amazing Texture Brush, add a little blush, and finish with Water Resistant Mascara.

Can’t Live Without Products: I have seen such great results from  Renew Serum that I would be heartbroken if I had to live without it! The Clear Complexion Pads are also a must have for me – a powerful product that’s also great for travel. Healing Gel is also one of my favorites because it does it what it says – it heals! It speeds up the recovery process post breakout and reduces redness so my breakouts aren’t as noticeable.  Oil Free SPF 40+, Brunette Dry Shampoo and Water Resistant Mascara are also always with me.

*10% Glycolic Cleanser is part of our Advanced Line. To learn more call 1-800-232-0398.

Blemish Treatment: The Dos and Don'ts

Pressure, pain, suspense - When new a blemish is about to make its debut these are just some of unwelcome feelings we’ve all experienced. Unfortunately, these pesky pimples often come at inopportune times (like the day before your wedding) but with the right treatment you can breathe a sigh of relief. Follow these tips on what to do and what not to do when you feel a blemish start to develop.

1) DO SPOT TREAT with something that contains antibacterial and healing agents like glotherapeutics Clear Anti-Blemish Treatment.

2) DON’T PICK at the breakout. Picking can actually extend the life of the breakout sometimes by 2-3 days, cause hyperpigmentation or scarring and spread bacteria to neighboring follicles which may cause additional lesions!

3) DO CLEANSE to remove dirt, debris, excess oil and makeup from the skin especially at night.

4) DON’T USE SCRUBS (mechanical exfoliants) over inflamed breakouts. Too much stimulation can be irritating and cause additional damage to the already delicate injured skin around the breakout area.

5) DO COVER UP with a good-for-your-skin concealer like glominerals Camouflage Oil Free. Applying coverup can also help you avoid picking at the breakout!

6) DON’T USE COMEDOGENIC MAKEUP.  Makeup may be the root cause of your breakout in the first place. Comedogenic makeup contains ingredients like talc that can cause irritation and contribute to the skin breaking out- always look for products labeled "non-comedogenic." All of glo minerals makeup is non-comedogenic!

Perfect Combos: Jeweled Eye Pencils & Eye Shadow Trios

We can’t stop raving about our new Jeweled Eye Pencils for several reasons: they are flattering for all eye colors, have the perfect amount of subtle shimmer, and glide on smoothly. But perhaps the best thing about these new Pencils is their versatility. They can stand alone with just a swipe of mascara or look beautiful when paired with our Eye Shadow Trios. National Makeup Artist Janeena paired three of our Eye Shadow Trios with Jeweled Eye Pencils to create  three stunning looks that only require two products!

Janeena paired the Jeweled Eye Pencil in baroque with Eye Shadow Trio in copper sheen for a pretty bronze eye that’s perfect for fall. To get this look, start by placing Jeweled Eye Pencil in baroque on your lower lid then blending it into your crease and bottom lash line with the Blending Brush. Next, apply the darkest color from Eye Shadow Trio in copper sheen on top and blend into crease and pack lower lash line. Apply the  light gold color from trio in crease and blend half way to brow bone. Complete the look by using the lightest shade to  highlight your brow bone and the inner corner of your eye.

For a little pop of color, Janeena dreamed up this pretty combo using the Jeweled Eye Pencil in merlot with the Eye Shadow Trio in palm. We love this unique combination of jewel tones! Start by applying merlot to your crease, your lid, and lower lash line. Next, blend the green from the Eye Shadow Trio palm into crease and lid creating a soft transition from the merlot to the green. Then apply the medium peach color from your crease to mid brow bone and highlight with the lightest color.

For a gorgeous, soft smoky eye look Janeena paired the Jeweled Eye Pencil in antique with Eye Shadow Trio in coffee. Recreate this look for a glamorous night out by placing antique in your crease and on your lower lash line. Next, apply the dark brown from the trio in crease and blend with the antique shade. Add the gold shade from trio on lid and blend completely with the Blender Brush. Finish the look by highlighting your brow bone with the lightest shade from the trio.

glo How-To: Let's Layer!

A common question we receive here at glo is how to layer your glo products correctly. To be more specific we hear, “Which comes first- serum or moisturizer?” The correct answer is serum first, moisturizer second. That said, it’s important to let your serum absorb completely before applying your moisturizer. Another common question is “Where does my daily SPF fit into the routine?” We recommend applying your SPF on top of your daily moisturizer. Take a peek at this helpful chart and leave any other questions you have about layering in the comments below!

One Trend, Two Ways: Smoky Eye

glominerals smoky eye kit

From runways and red carpets to date nights and the office, smoky eyes are a versatile look perfect for any occasion. Don’t be intimidated by this popular trend, instead use glo minerals Smoky Eye Kit for easy application. This gorgeous compact makes creating a stunning smoky eye simple with four bendable and versatile shades. To demonstrate the endless possibilities, our National Makeup Artist, Janeena, created two looks using the Smoky Eye Kit- one that is perfect of a glamorous night out and another simple look that is appropriate for daytime.

For a dramatic, sultry smoky eye Janeena applied the darkest shade in the Smoky Eye Kit from her lashline to her crease with the Eye Base Brush. Next, she placed the matte, medium-grey shade in her crease and blended with the darker color using the Eye Blender Brush. Then she applied the grey shimmery shade across her entire lid a blended all three shades together. Lastly, she used the lightest shade as a highlight above the crease and in the inner corner of her eye.

For a subtle look that still has a smoky feel, we suggest starting with the light base shades from the kit and applying it across your entire lid. Next, apply the medium gray and shimmery gray shades in the crease and blend with the base shade using the Eye Blender Brush. Finish with a couple coats of Water Resistant Mascara and you are all set!

glo How-To: Acne and Blemish Cover-Up

how-to cover-up acne and blemishes

Aging has a bad rap but we think growing older has some special benefits like wisdom, grace, and experience (just to name a few). However, we do understand that the skin issues associated with aging can be frustrating. While wrinkles and age spots are the most common issues associate with maturing skin, blemishes and acne don’t magically disappear when you leave your teenage years behind. Stubborn blemishes and acne can stick around well past your teens and early twenties. In fact, one in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 struggle with adult acne. Factors such as stress, changing hormones and diet can all cause breakouts and sometimes these things are out of our control. The right skincare and makeup routine can help you treat and cover your adult acne.

National Makeup Artist and Educator, Janeena, shows us how to cover up blemishes for a glowing complexion in just seven easy steps. As an added bonus, glominerals makeup not only covers blemishes beautifully, but helps you heal and treat your acne with Vitamins A, C, E and Green Tea Extract.
Follow these simple steps to help cover your blemishes:

2) Prime
3) Apply a thin layer of Protective Liquid Foundation - Satin II over whole face
4) Spot treat  with Camouflage Oil Free Concealer and the tip of the  Precision Camouflage Brush
5) With Finishing Sponge, roll and dab Satin II  over covered blemishes and even out over entire face
