All About the Eyes: Swollen or Puffy Eyes

What causes puffy or swollen eyes?

Whether it’s puffiness, dark circles or crows feet, the area around our eyes is often problematic for women of all ages and skin types. It’s not surprising since the skin around our eyes is some of the thinnest and most delicate skin on our bodies. This means it’s the most susceptible to the elements- changes in climate, our lifestyle habits and even gravity! In the following weeks we are going to take a closer look at three of the most common issues plaguing our eyes. First up, puffy or swollen eyelids.

What Causes Puffy or Swollen Eyes?
Often times puffiness under the eye is caused by extra fluid retention due to a lack of sleep, changes in weather, changing hormone levels or too much salt or caffeine in the diet. Allergies or a genetic predisposition can also cause extra swelling under the eyes.

Preventing Puffy or Swollen Eyes: You can take steps to reduce inflammation under the eyes by eating foods with a low salt content, avoiding high amounts caffeine and getting a full 8 hours of sleep. In addition, sleeping with a cold compress or with your head slightly raised (and avoiding sleeping on your stomach) can help reduce inflammation. You can also look for products like Vital Eye Cream which contain ingredients like Eyeliss to help reduce puffiness.

Treating Puffy or Swollen Eyes: Waking up with puffy eyes isn’t a fun way to start the day. We suggest using Eye Fix Revitalizing Treatment right when you wake up. Eye Fix Revitalizing Treatment contains both Rosemary Leaf Oil and Lavender Flower Oil to help with inflammation. For even better results, keep the treatment in the refrigerator and apply cold to help alleviate swelling. Applying a cool compress, such as cool tea bags, cooled eye pillows, cucumber slices or a chilled spoon can also
help decrease pressure and swelling.

Special Occasion Look: Girls Night Out

Girls Night Out Makeup

Last week Ami showed us how to make getting ready for date night a breeze and this week Janeena is showing us her easy “girls night out” routine. A fun evening out with your friends is a great way to relax and let your hair down. Plus, it’s  the perfect occasion to add some extra pizazz to your normal beauty routine.

To get this look Janeena first applied Lid Primer from the Cream Shadow Quad using the Camouflage Brush. Next, she applied Cream Eyeliner in ebony to her upper and lower lash lines. She then applied the dawn shade from the Cream Eye Shadow Quad to her entire lid. Next, she used first blush as a highlight color on her brow bone and on the inner corner of eyes. To add depth, Janeena applied earth in the crease and on her lower lash line.  She added a couple coats of Lash Boosting Mascara, dusted her cheekbones with Shimmer Brick in luster then completed the look with Gloss in coconut from the Blush to Bare Lip Gloss Tin.

To compliment her playful makeup, Janeena used Boost Hair Volumizer to help her create big, voluminous curls. She added her favorite gold, triangle earrings to give the look a bit of edge. We think this look is perfect for whatever you and your favorite pals decide to get into on your night out! Karaoke anyone?

glo How-To: 70's Beauty Icon

Can you guess which style icon served as Ami’s inspiration when creating this 70’s look? If you guessed the one-and-only Cher, you are correct (see the inspiration image here)! Cher managed to re-establish her status as a beauty icon in every decade since the 1960’s but we particularly love her look in the 1970’s. Her long black hair, perfectly bold eyebrows and gorgeous eyelashes set her apart then and make her a beauty icon that still inspires us today.

To create this Cher inspired look (hello great Halloween idea!) Ami followed these steps:

Step 1: Apply the foundation of your choice -and conceal with Camouflage Oil Free Concealer.
Step 2: Overarch your natural brow using the Brow Collection.
Step 3: Apply Lid Primer then Eye Shadow in diamond all over lid.
Step 4: Using the Mini Crease Brush draw a black line in the arch of the crease with Eye Shadow in sable (this can be blended with Eye Shadow in twig if necessary but make sure to keep the bottom of the lid clean).
Step 5: Apply Precision Eye Pencil in black to both your top and bottom lash line while keeping the line thicker on the outer corner.
Step 6: Apply lots and lots of Water Resistant Mascara.
Step 7: Contour the face with a Pressed Base shade that’s two shades darker than your natural color.
Step 8: Highlight the tops of the cheekbones using the Shimmer Brick in gleam.
Step 9: Apply the Precision Lip Pencil in cedar and top it off with Lipstick in sugar plum.

Special Occasion Look: Date Night

date night makeup and hair

Whether celebrating an anniversary or maybe just the fact that the babysitter was finally available, going out on a date with your significant other is a great way to spend some quality time together. Another reason we love date night is that it gives us a reason to look a little more glam than we do in our busy day-to-day lives. Have you been dying to try a cat eye? Go for it! Did you see a cute hair tutorial on Pinterest? Give it a shot!

National Makeup Artist, Ami Shvartzman, shows us her easy as 1-2-3 date night look. First, she likes to experiment with fun, flirty colors. To create this look Ami applied Cream Eyeliner in ebony followed by Eye Shadow in rain forest on her lids. She then blended the vibrant color with Eye Shadow in sable while creating a slight wing. She added a little Powder Cheek Stain to her cheeks and Liquid Lips in black cherry to her lips. The final look is pretty with a pop of unexpected color!

To compliment her look, Ami created a romantic side swept bun that she kept in place using Radiant Fix Hairspray and added a gorgeous long necklace to keep the look both elegant and simple. We think this look is great for a romantic night out! Tell us what you think in the comments below.

glo How-To: Iconic Beauty

We love Old Hollywood glamour- winged eyeliner, bold lips, a gorgeous glow- all of these things evoke images of Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis and Sophia Loren. Our National Makeup Artist, Janeena, used the ageless Sophia Loren as her inspiration for creating this stunning look. Her goal was to channel old Hollywood glamour while keeping the look modern and wearable. We think she accomplished just that!

Find inspiration for Halloween or recreate this look for everyday by following these steps:

Step 2: Lightly contour cheeks with the limited edition Bronze Kiss.
Step 3: Apply Eye Shadow in diamond all over lid.
Step 4: Line your lashes using Cream Eyeliner in ebony. The line should be slightly thicker than your everyday liner.
Step 5: Line your bottom lashes with Cream Eyeliner in ebony. Follow the lash line upward to create a soft wing.
Step 6: Retrace the upper lash line and connect the line with the edge of the wing.
Step 7: Fill in eyebrows using Brow Powder Duo and the Dual Brow Brush.
Step 8: Apply Gloss in star struck.

Ami Approved: Bronze Kiss

I always look forward to new product launches here at glo but there is one product launch that always excites me just a little bit more than the rest. In October, glo launches special edition products from which a portion of proceeds benefits the National Breast Cancer Foundation in its mission to save lives through early detection and by providing mammograms to women in need. This year glo is launching two amazing products: glo minerals Bronze Kiss bronzer/highlighter combo and special edition glo therapeutics Restorative Cream.

I am particularly thrilled with the new Bronze Kiss highlighter and bronzer duo. Bronze Kiss features a lovely soft natural red/brown luminous bronzer accompanied with a beautiful pink highlighter that can be used to enhance the contours of the face. Use the bronze side to help shape the face under the cheekbones and jawline and then use the shimmery pink side to highlight the brow bone, the high points of the cheeks and down the bridge of the nose. This will create a subtle highlight and contour. For a product that gives back and helps you look red carpet ready, Bronze Kiss is Ami Approved!

Fall Pinterest Inspiration with Janeena Billera

miranda kerr makeup tutorial

In September we asked for your help picking our next fall makeup tutorial on Pinterest and we were truly inspired by all of your pins! Our National Makeup Artists had a difficult time narrowing it down to their top picks but they finally picked their favorites. They then recreated the looks using all glo minerals products while adding their own twist to the look. The results are stunning!

Janeena picked this gorgeous look pinned by our follower Aly because of its ability to “really catch someone’s attention in a unique way!” We couldn’t agree more! The bold lip will definitely draw attention which is why the rest of the look is understated and simple. Janeena stressed the importance of keeping the eyes very basic and leaving the skin almost bare. “I think it takes a unique and strong personality to pull of such a bold lip. Plus its great for fall!” says Janeena.

To recreate this look follow these steps:
Step One: Apply a thin layer of Sheer Tint Base with fingers to clean skin.
Step Two: For a subtle highlight cover face with Shimmer Brick in luster using the Texture Brush.
Step Three: Apply the light bronze shade from the Shimmer Brick in luster to eyelids.
Step Four: Apply a very thin line to the upper and lower lash lines with the Precise Micro Eyeliner in black and then add a couple of coats of Lash Boosting Mascara.
Step Five: Apply a thin layer of The Mint Balm.
Step Six: Using the Precision Eye Pencil in plum, line and fill-in your lips completely.
Step Seven: Finish with another thin layer of The Mint Balm.

Were you inspired by any of the looks pinned? We’d love to see your take! Post a picture on our Facebook page or on Instagram!
