Chemical Peel Photo Diary: Danelle's Retinol+ C Exfoliant Treatment

If you’ve ever wondered “What can I expect from a professional chemical peel?” you’re not alone! We answer countless questions regarding our professional chemical peels and treatments. Since glo therapeutics offers a wide range of advanced peel treatments designed to target skin concerns including fine lines, acne, hyperpigmentation and dull skin, the answers to these questions vary. Our peels range from mild to aggressive and the results can be truly stunning.
For a closer look at one of our newest peels, the Retinol + C Exfoliant, check out the Q&A and photo diary from Danelle below. Danelle is a licensed esthetician and makeup artist at French Pharmacie in Indianapolis and was kind enough to share her experience with the Retinol + C Exfoliant through a daily peel diary. This treatment is great for those looking to brighten dull skin and improve skin’s texture. You will see sloughing typically 2-3 days after this peel is administered so we recommend scheduling the treatment at least 2 weeks before an event.
glo: How would you describe the condition of your skin before the peel?
Danelle: I’ve been an esthetician for 8 years, so I’m meticulous about my skincare routine and my skin is in good condition. It’s usually normal to dry and I don’t typically break out. My skin tone is fair so I’m religious about using sunscreen and have been for years therefore I don’t have much sun damage. I am in my mid 30’s now so I have started to notice some fine lines creeping up.
glo: What does your current skincare routine look like?
Danelle: Since my skin is normal to dry, I use Hydrating Gel Cleanser in the AM & PM. In the mornings I use 15% Vitamin C Serum & Oil Free SPF 40+. My evening routine includes applying Super Serum, Cyto-luxe Eye Cream and Conditioning Hydration Cream.
glo: What goals were you looking to achieve after the peel?
Danelle: I ordered the Retinol + C Exfoliant from the spa I work at and, as with any new product, I wanted to try it out on myself before using it on my clients. I honestly didn’t have any expectations going into the peel.
glo: Was this your first peel?
Danelle: No. I typically do a Modified Jessner once or twice a year and Lactic 15% peels approximately every 3 months.
glo: What was your day to day experience following the Retinol + C Exfoliant treatment?
Day 1: My skin was just slightly pink after applying the peel. Since the product stays on the skin it did feel a little greasy for awhile. I had no discomfort during the application of the peel or later that day. Following the protocol, I did not put anything else on my face and did not wash my face until the next morning.

Day 2: My skin felt tight (in a good way) and it was still slightly pink, but I had no discomfort this day. I washed my face & used my sunscreen in the morning, but I used no other products this day.

Day 3: The flaking started. For me it began around my chin area. It was still a little pink, but it was not uncomfortable. I washed my face and put on my SPF in the morning. I did apply a little makeup this day (Pressed Base) and then cleansed my face at night.

Day 4: My face really began to peel. It was still slightly pink underneath all the flaking. I gently rinsed my face (& fought the urge to pick at it all day). When I put on my sunscreen there was an initial stinging sensation, but that quickly went away and my skin felt better afterwards. I did not attempt to put on makeup this day but I did apply Oil Free Moisturizer off and on throughout the day. Again, I’d have an initial stinging sensation that would quickly fade. At night I washed my face and then just let it be.

Day 5 & 6: These two days were pretty much the same. There was less peeling than day 4, but it was still noticeably flaky. The redness began fading. Both days I washed my face, put on SPF & let it go the rest of the day.

Day 7: When I woke up the majority of the flaking was gone. I had no redness. I could tell a huge difference in the overall brightness of my skin. It was firmer & softer. The appearance of my pores had diminished. I was highly impressed with the results. I washed my face and put on sunscreen. At this point I could’ve put on makeup, but my skin felt so good I didn’t want to!

glo: What was the condition of your skin after the peel?
Danelle: My skin felt softer, firmer, brighter and the appearance of my pores has diminished.
glo: Did the peeling process interfere with your day to day life?
Since I work as an esthetician I would say no. My clients were fascinated and really enjoyed that I let them see the process of the peel. My husband just thought it was funny but he’s also accustomed this kind of thing. I didn’t notice if anyone was giving me crazy looks at the grocery store or anything!
glo: Would you recommend this peel to a friend?

Danelle: Yes, I have recommended it to several friends and clients. I had clients that were so excited when they saw me peeling they asked to have it done right then & there. They didn’t even want to wait to see my results!

glo: Are you happy with the results?
Danelle: Yes, I am very happy and impressed with the results of this peel. I honestly wasn’t expecting the results I achieved since I do peels on a regular basis and have a good at home routine. I really did notice a visible difference in the appearance of my skin. I know if I got these kinds of results, my clients are really going to be happy with their results as well. I will definitely be using this on myself again and I will be using it a lot in my treatment room.

Expert Education: 10 Facts About Moisturizers

Here at glo, we take pride in not only providing you an excellent product selection, but also in delivering the necessary resources and information to help educate and support your skincare goals. We’ve received lots of feedback from both our professional retailers and loyal customers asking for more in-depth glo product knowledge and information. In our Expert Education blog series our goal is to provide you with a deeper look at the science behind our system.

With a strong focus on clinical skincare and the importance of high-performance ingredients, it’s crucial that our Education, Product Development and Marketing teams are full of knowledgeable, experienced and creative individuals. In our Expert Education series these talented and passionate team members will share their expertise in an effort to satisfy your skincare curiosity!

One of our resident skin experts (and glo therapeutics Product Manager), Anna De La Cruz, has a wealth of knowledge about all things skincare. Anna recently completed an audio training with our Sales Consultants on the importance of moisturizes and it was full of great information. We’ve rounded up 10 facts about moisturizers from the training to help you increase your own skincare knowledge.

1) The skin’s #1 job is protection. We want a strong, fortified outer layer of protection to guard against intruders.

2) When a skin cell is born and starts its journey through the epidermis its contents are about 90% moisture. By the end of its journey, a skin cell’s moisture content will have decreased to about 10%.

3) Natural moisturizing factor (NMF) helps maintain proper hydration by attracting and absorbing water from the atmosphere and holding on to it with naturally present water-soluble compounds.

4) NMF is only found in the stratum corneum (the outer and upper most section of the epidermis).

5) Moisturizers are typically made up of ingredients that fall into the following categories: humectants, emollients and occlusives.

6) Humectants attract water and include ingredients like hyaluronic acid, panthenol, glycerin, and Sodium PCA.

7) Emollients act as lubricants and soften the skin. Emollients are found in ingredients such as jojoba oil, squalene and wheat germ.

8) Occlusives help slow water loss and evaporation and can be found in dimethicone, cyclomethicone and caprylic/capric triglyceride.

9) Dehydrated skin is not functioning optimally which means the skin’s natural exfoliation process is disrupted which can lead to dull, flaky, lackluster skin. It can also contribute to easily irritated, sensitized, reactive skin.
10) In cold winter conditions it’s important for skin therapists to add an extra moisture boost in the treatment room while also offering clients an extra dose of hydration at home.

Removing your makeup before bed can seem time consuming and tedious (especially those nights you wind up asleep on your couch watching reruns) but it’s a necessary step towards great skin! Skin Sin #5: Picking Your Skin

Guest Post by gloProfessional’s National Educator, Ami Shvartzman.

Skin Sin #5: Picking Your Skin

Skin Sin #5:  Picking Your Skin
Picking at your skin or popping pimples can be almost impossible to resist. Don’t give into temptation! Picking or popping can be dangerous, in fact, it can lead to the spread of bacteria, scarring and can delay your skin’s natural healing process.

For those of you who have had a chemical exfoliation treatment this is extremely important! We know not picking or pulling at the skin is hard to avoid but after a treatment, your skin is in an extremely sensitive state and must be left alone for the process to work. Please avoid touching, popping, picking and peeling your skin while it heals! Help your skin heal quickly by applying Healing Gel with clean fingertips to irritated or problem areas.

Get Serious About Moisture!

It’s time to get serious about moisture! Not only does hydrated skin look fresh and healthy but having properly moisturized skin will help prevent premature aging. Since dry skin is more susceptible to the formation of deep lines and wrinkles on the face we recommend using a moisturizer daily.  In addition to a daily moisturizer, adding B5 Hydration will ensure your skin is getting the hydration it needs.

For a limited time only, receive a free Mini B5 Hydration with any moisturizer purchase! Add a glo therapeutics moisturizer to your shopping cart then use the code MINIB5 at checkout. Your glowing, healthy skin will thank you!

*Offer valid while supplies last. Cannot be combined with other promos or applied to past orders.

Guest Post by gloProfessional’s National Educator, Ami Shvartzman.

Skin Sin #4: Forgetting to Clean Your Cell Phone
Is there anything we hold nearer and dearer to our hearts (and our faces) than our  trusty cell phones? Our cell phones can be responsible for high levels of bacteria coming into contact with our skin. Do you breakout on one side of your face, along your jawline or on top of your cheeks? If so, you need to remember to keep that cell phone clean to prevent the spread of bacterial growth! Try using glo therapeutics Purifying Tonic on a tissue or glo therapeutics Clear Complexion Pads to keep it clean!

Skincare Q&A: Moisturizers

Skincare Q&A: Moisturizers

Feeling a little bit like a crocodile this winter? The name of the game when it comes to repairing and restoring dry skin during winter months is moisture and hydration. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions I receive regarding moisturizers.

If I have oily skin do I need to wear a moisturizer?

Yes! We generally describe skin type by the amount of oil skin produces. Dry skin has a lack of oil, while oily skin produces too much oil (or sebum). Regardless of your skin type, it is important to keep it moisturized! Keeping your skin moisturized not only encourages healthy cell turnover but helps fight the signs of aging. The good news is that glo therapeutics offers a wide spectrum of moisturizers even for those of you with oily skin. I recommend glo therapeutics Oil Control Emulsion which actually contains ingredients like D-Cholic Acid to help control sebum production. Oil Free Moisturizer is another outstanding option because it helps balance your skin while moisturizing.

If I am using a moisturizer do I need to use a B5 serum?

Yes! Serums are the most important part of any skincare regimen! With a higher concentration of active ingredients and a smaller molecular size, serums are meant to work on specific skin issues and help dramatically change your skin. A serum like glo therapeutics B5 Hydration contains Hyaluronic Acid which is a powerful water binder that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This mean it’s a great hydrator without being heavy! In addition to being an amazing hydrator, Hyaluronic Acid also assists with the penetration of Vitamin C Serum (essential to every skin care regimen) while plumping the skin and helping to overcome irritation and inflammation.

Why is my moisturizer “balling up”?

There are a number of reasons that a moisturizer could feel like it is “balling” or “rolling” on the skin. The culprit is most likely an overuse of product. Using too much product in conjunction with other skin care products or makeup can be a bit too much for the skin to absorb causing buildup. Remember to give your skin enough time to absorb each product before applying the next.  Another reason you might be experiencing this is that you could be using a moisturizer that is too thick or occlusive for your skin type. I suggest trying something a bit more lightweight.

If I’m using a moisturizer, do I still need an eye cream?

Yes! The skin around your eyes is much different than the skin on the rest of the face. It is more delicate, more sensitive and thinner! glo therapeutics eye care formulations also have ingredients that are specifically meant to treat concerns that we face in the eye area like wrinkles, dryness, puffiness and dark circles. Try glo therapeutics Vital Eye Cream which helps to smooth and hydrate the under eye area.

How long should my moisturizer last?

First of all, all glo therapeutics moisturizers have a shelf-life of 24 months after opening. This is indicated by a little open jar symbol located on the component that says “24.” However, with daily use, most of our products will last between 3 and 6 months. To keep your moisturizer fresh for the whole time it’s on your shelf, be sure to store your moisturizer well (in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight) and if your moisturizer comes in a jar, wash your hands before using  or use a clean spatula to prevent bacteria growth!
