Usually a produict will be strong in one or two areas of perfomance, so you have to layer on several things, & often that then affects the integrity of what you are using. If you're a beauty junkie like us, then there's no better way to start off the New Year than by clearing out the clutter on your bathroom shelves! That means, letting go of barely-used or expired products.

When's the last time you opened the blue bottle you keep underneath the sink? Can't remember? Then it's probably time to toss it out. We know, we know, sometimes it's hard to part with quality products you spent your hard-earned money on. But just like food, beauty products have a shelf life and the longer you keep them (as in months and years) the less likely their active ingredients are to work making them less effective anyway. So how do you know when it's time for your purple liquid eyeliner to go? Use your senses:

How does it smell? If it's rancid, pungent, or sour, toss it out
How does it look? If it's layered, unusually thick, or discolored, toss it out
How does it feel? If it's sticky, or watery, toss it out

Another rule of thumb is to check the period after opening (aka hatbox) symbol on the back of the container. This often overlooked code gives you the approximate time period, in months, that your product should last after it's opened. Keep in mind though, that improper storage, using dirty applicators, and extreme heat or cold can accelerate the expiration date.

But, "hold on!" you say, your product is still in good shape. Then consider handing off one of your many splurges to a friend who is more likely to use a body bronzer than you are. And who knows, maybe they'll give you that new eye shadow you've been wanting to try in return.

Last week our go-to makeup guru, Kate McCarthy, got to escape the winter cold at our Denver office and travel to Florida where she showed off her makeup skills on NBC Miami. The segment focused on how to create three simple looks that anyone—that means you—can master. Here are her tips: Day Look: The model's skin was a little dry so McCarthy decided to use Loose Base which gives a dewy finish perfect for reflecting light. Then she blended the dusty rose, mauve, and silver shades found in the Eye Shadow Trio in Napoli to create a natural look suitable for a 9 to 5, or a Saturday running errands. A touch of Blush in Bellini and the first model was good to go! Hyper-pigmentation: The second model struggled with skin pigmentation irregularities, so McCarthy used first applied a light layer of Camouflage on the areas that needed to be lightened followed up by Pressed Base on top. Once there was a smooth canvas, she used the Eye Shadow Trio in amethyst for a fun evening look. Holiday Look: For the final look McCarthy chose to do a twist on the classic smoky eye using the Alloy Eyes Collection. "Instead or pulling the 'smoke' [aka darkest shade] all the way up to the crease," she says, "I just smoked out her liner using the Micro-Precision Eye Pencil and the darkest shimmer from the [collection]. Next year will look a whole lot brighter now that Pantone LLC—the world's foremost color authority—officially announced last Thursday that Tangerine Tango is 2012's Color of the Year. Press base color into eyelid from lashes to underneath the brow with the eye base brush.
With the eye base brush, press the lid color onto entire eyelid, stopping underneath the brow bone.
Using the mini crease brush, take the crease color and start at the outer edge of eye and work the brush back and forth in a windshield wiper motion 3/4 of the way into the eye.
Line the upper lash line by pressing the liner color into the lash line with the smudge brush. Follow the entire lash line from the outer to inner corner.
With the smudge brush apply the liner color to lower eye area by pressing into the lash line. Follow lash line from outer to inner corner.
Finish by gently running the smudge brush across the upper and lower lash line to create a smooth, even, smoky look.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at glo, we're proud to support the cause by donating a portion of proceeds from the special-edition Gloss in pink blossom to the National Breast Cancer Foundation(NBCF) for the fourth-consecutive year.

According tothe NBCF, breast cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of cancer-relateddeath among American women, second only to lung cancer. Each year, approximately 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,000 will die from it. But women are not the only ones vulnerable to thedisease. Roughly 1,700 cases each year are also foundamong men. Statistics like these tell only part of the story. They do not take into account the effect breast cancer has on the families, friends and supporters of those fighting the disease. That's why we are so grateful for the opportunity support all those affected by breast cancer and to join the National Breast Cancer Foundation in its mission to extend women's lives through education and early detection.

Severalmembers of the glōProfessional team can personally attest to the fact that for those faced with fighting breast cancer andthe loved ones who help them - the diagnosis can be overwhelming and intimidating. Cathleen Tatman, glōProfessional’sdirector of marketing, recalls when her mother was diagnosed in 2007. Eventhough her mother “is now doing fantastically,” Tatman wanted to do something tohelp others who find themselves in a similar situation.

“We are acompany that has mostly a female audience, and so I thought it was something thatwould be important to our customers as well,” she said. That's whyglōProfessional began donating to the NBCF in 2008, but the support does'tstop there. This year, a small group of glōProfessional staff members joined together for the first time to participate in Denver’s Race for the Curesponsored by the Susan G. Koman Foundation.
